40x in 6-284 question

I have a 40X in 6-284 with a 22” 10” twist bbl from Remington’s custom shop. I cannot contact the original owner with thix question. I recently chrony’d it and found not too surpringly that it is about 150 fps below all the published load data in all bullet weights I tried. I purchased this rifle mainly for future rebarrelling and its very decent scope/mounts. My question is why anyone in the late 80s timeframe would choose this hotrod bbl-burner then stifle it with a stubby barrel? It does not appear to have been rebarrelled or set back. It is however very accurate...

Your right it seems odd to have such a short barrel and 10 twist, maybe it was a 244 or 243 earlier and someone wanted more power.Mine is 30”
I have a scope on the way for it and look forward to seeing what it will do to long range ‘chucks.I would try some 87 V-Max’s and see how she does on varmints,if it doesn’t do well I’d rebarrel to a 25/284 or a 6.5-284 with a 30” barrel.Just my .02.Perhaps they subscribed to the short stiff theory and wanted to see how much accuracy a 6-284 could produce with match bullets, although you would think they would have tried that with a 14 twist.

im trying to recall what the trend in long distance target shooting was back then, which was its intended purpose. 243AI was available then which i think is a more efficient 6mm hot rod

Could be any of the reasons stated above or more, good thing is you purchased it mainly for a rebarrel AND it’s very accurate with a good quality set of scope rings... sounds like a win win to me, enjoy.
