40X 22LR value

I have what I consider a pretty nice 40X rimfire. It's not US marked but was told by members here that it may have been an Air Force rifle. IDK about that for sure but????? I'm considering selling it and I don't want to gouge but I'd like to get fair market value. The blueing's nice and the stock isn't beat up with dings and scratch's or dents. I love the rifle and it shoots amazing, (CCI Standard Plus), but it sets a lot more than it gets shot. It has Leupold rings and bases and a 6-24 Weaver that will be sold with the rifle. I considered rebarreling it and a new stock to make it lighter and more user friendly but its so nice I think that might be a big mistake.

I collect and shoot these. I’m shooting one in a match tomorrow. I have never bought a .22 40-X that has been rebarreled. Once we do that to a 40-X, imo it is just another custom gun. Nothing wrong with custom guns as shooters. Everyone that competes needs good shooters. However, custom match guns are not collectible, per se, regardless of whether they shoot smaller. (It would have been a huge mistake in 1975 to trade out a 426 ci for a crate elephant motor in a 1971 hemicuda.) A 40-X is undoubtedly one of the most collectible rifles there is in original form.

I've had 2 original un-messed with .22LR 40x's. Both excellent shooters. Sold 1 as I felt it was too heavy for extended off-hand shooting (rather than simply acquiring another rifle), and sold the other for an offer that was too good to pass up. Consider it "regret x 2". I am always on the lookout for another that maybe this time I will remember my regrets for selling the other 2 and not repeat my mistake a 3rd time.

Part of my reason considering selling is it seldom gets shot. My club has no BR matchs or for that matter other than skeet, no competitions what so ever. I tried having some but no one showed up. The other reason is some what money related. I'm trying to put some money together for a rifle without going into my savings. I know there will be regrets, I have a list of them so I guess one more won't hurt.

I like those. The bolt should have the last 4 digits of the serial number on it. The barrel should have small tapped screw holes on it. I do collect those, and I shoot them.

I’d like a chance to better any offers you get on it.

To me, if all angles look equally good to what I see, It in the neighborhood of $1k.

Just the rifle, no scope and base. I do like it.

Today's market is ever changing IMHO . If it is as clean as you say and 4 digit serial # $ 1400.--1600. bare rifle + 250. for the scope.
I presently own 5 40 X's one being a Repeater Sporter these rifles will make you more $$$ than any bank.

The 4 digit are the MOST desirable as they were made when Mike Walker was running the Custom shop

Good Luck

Jim

I didn’t notice whether he was describing it as a four number gun, but i had mentioned that bolts were hand engraved with the last four digits of the SN.

You’re in Oklahoma and I’m in Texas, that’s pretty convenient. If you want your rifle to be fed well with a diet of Midas, get regular exercise, at matches, and maybe even see live pictures of it like this one, about to start a match, PM me and I’m sure we can make arrangements.

** Tough four card BR club match with tricky wind and lead changes, but the old warhorse won it, again. These guns remain in my circle of trust :).

I guess I've talked myself out of selling in for now anyway. Seems they are getting harder to find and the price keeps going up. Maybe I can sparks some interest at my club and get some type of matchs going. Thanks Guys.

I clearly am enamored with them, having four 40-X .22’s, and always looking for the next right one. Keep yours, but know if the time comes, I’ll both pay you very fairly for it, and also endeavor to bring credit to the legacy of these fine guns.
