400 Legend

You might try the Bear Creek Ballistics bullets. I have loaded those in a 400 and they shoot a lot better and faster than any of the mz bullets that I have tried. They do good on paper but can't say how they would do on deer yet.

There is actually a tremendous bullet selection for the 400 Legend.
There are a lot of hi BD smokeless MLer 40 cal bullets. Fury, Pittman Hammer, Pittman AccuMax, Bear Creek, Barnes(195), CEB (165 & 240 - need annealed), Hornady 200 SST (really good choice).

The 400 Legend has a significant short coming: short overall cartridge length which favors blunt bullets. The higher BC’d bullets like the 225/228g AccuMax with a .315 BC has to be into the case “neck” at least 0.4” to fit into the magazine. If shot single shot, and loaded to a depth of 0.20” , the bullet is 0.2” longer than the overall cartridge neck. The contour of the Fury and Pittman bullets allow 0.2” beyond max cartridge length before engaging the barrel throat.

Bear Creek, Pittman, Fury and the 200SST are all worthy contenders if willing to go over the max overall length. The future (hope) CVA Scout may be the best overall choice for reloaders with 400 Legends, or just have the 1st round one of your handloads and know where the factory loads hit if you need a fast followup shot.

I believe that the 400 Legend has an excellent selection of bullets especially when recoil is considered.

I had not heard of this cartridge until now. Seems “they” keep coming up with new sales strategies every other month. Where's the 6.5 Legend? That should sell like hotcakes!
I used to get the itch for a “new” cartridge. Now, I just shop in my safe or buy good deals on Tikkas in cartridges I already have.
Nothing wrong with having choices, tho. I recently picked up a lever gun in 44 Magnum. Holds ten rounds and I already reload for it. I was looking hard at the Bushmaster guns but settled on the 44. I have two 45/70 guns, so any longer distance shots I plan on are covered.

Thank you for that I guess I didn’t do enough of my homework
Hopefully, I didn’t come across harshly. I’m afraid it could be taken that way. I’ve been shooting 40 cal, smokeless MLers since 2001 and have continually searched for better 40 cal bullets. This has been an obsession of mine so when SW cartridges were legalized, the 400 Legend became of particular interest: I had quite an assortment of 40 cal bullets.

But, I was only partly correct concerning the available bullets. The magazines are built to accommodate 2.26” maximum length. This necessatates a rather squatty bullet or a longer , higher BC bullet deep into the case neck. Or, the bullet could be loaded to a depth of 0.2” but used in a single shot scenario .

I wish the magazine length and breech were made to accommodate a higher BC’d bullet
ideally seated (0.2 “ - 0.25”). Possibly, the reload, the hi BC bullet/cartridge will be shot singly with factory loads in the magazine.

Again, I didn’t mean to be come across as condescending.

I found a bullet that Hornady makes for muzzleloader the 40 cal 200 gr SST thanks for your help
Yeah, I'd look for 40 cal ML bullets. I think Maker has a monolithic for it. I'd also consider the 195gr TMZ from Barnes. It should be awesome in the 400 legend. I've been hoping the Legend cartridges would spurr some projectile development in the .356 and .401 space, but it hasn't happened. I really want to build a smokeless 40 cal ML, but I'm holding off because of the limited projectile options. 225gr Pittmann Hammer could be another option, but you'd have to ask SEW how they "should" perform in the legend.
