40 gr .223....velocity load?

My supply of AA2200 is all but gone, need a new pd shooting powder.

N130, H322, R10x, etc are all in the range.

If you have something delivering 3800 fps, I would appreciate the info.

Halfmile I use a heavy dose of H322 under a non-moly 40 gr V-Max with a CCI primer. I use this load on everything from coyotes to turtles.

I do not have access to a chronograph so I am not positive how fast my load is going but it will raise a fair sized turtle completely out of the water and crows are only puffs of feathers after being hit with these things.

The splat factor with V-Maxes is so much greater than with the Ballistic tips in .224 caliber.

You can go to the Vit. Powder Website and download their free data. They have several powders that will get you to the 3800 fps neighbhood w/ 40gr bullets. IIRC, N-133,135.

Just looked and
N-130 is showing 26.8 grs @ 3780 fps
N-133 is showing 28.4 grs @ 3846 fps

That would be stroking!!

I've been using H-322 with mine but plan on trying
the Vit powders once my supply is used up...

Thanks for the input, folks. I have the 2006 PDF from VIT showing 130 at 3760, I guess I should go check for new data.

Of course, my rifles may do better or worse depending. I just ladder up till I get the cutesy little ring around the primer and then back off a tenth or so.

The 2200 was so accurate, pun unintentional) I hate to lose it. Maybe I'll find some more but It looks like VIT is the stuff.

Alliant 410 is in the same area re burn rate, has anyone tried it?

Thx again,

HM

My Vit data is from the '04 loadbook but it's still only 20 fps different from your '06 data. Close enough:) The max powder charge/velocity window should give you a good idea where max is located though...Ladder away.

Best in my guns with 40's/50's are AA2015 and VV133. Both give superb accuracy and better velocity than you'd imagine. One 20" rebarrelled .223 with very tight chamber gets 3895 with 40's and 27.5/133. Another gun with 26.5" barrel shoots 40's at 100fps more using 26.5/AA2015. This is with IMI brass and Rem 7-1/2BR primer. Either of those two powders are fantastic. In your gun, start about 3gr. below these loads and work up.

Keep in mind, that the Vihtavuori manual is fairly conservative. I can usually add 1-3 more grains in most cartridges, above Viht. max loads) without any pressure signs.

I kind of got that idea. Actually, Accurate seems to be the only one that approaches realism.

I'm sure this is lawsuit protection.

My usual technique is to run them up the ladder till the bolt opens hard and then back off till the only pressure sign is a little ring around the primer dent.

This is in my dog guns, of course. Accuracy loads are wherever they work best, sometimes a couple under max.

Finally got some powder. N133 seems to run out of room at about 27 gr. Maybe with a long spout I could get more. This is with Remmy brass.

2015 is a little better, volume wise. I got to 26.5 with a little room left. There is a slight density difference between the 2, 2015 is denser.

Off to the range! Thanks for the input.

Well, what's the verdict??? I've been playing with 40gr Moly V-Max's & #2400 with great results. That load is going faster than any other load I've tried in my 223.

Got interrupted by a PD trip, just got back. Seems like so far the 2015 is going to work out, got to 3700+ on the last outing.

Can't get enough 133 in the case. Will try tapping cases for more powder, and maybe find a long spout somewhere for my measure if that would help.

Now the 2400 idea is definitely going to confuse me, don't want to miss out on anything. Tried RL10, ho hum results.

More to come.

Haven't done any long term tests for case life but #2400 will push 40gr Moly V-Max's @ 3875 fps w/ great accuracy in my 223. My barrel really loves that combo.

Well, I just happen to have some 2400, How much are you using?

I'll try anything once. My burn charts show it much faster than AA2015, So I'll have to start low.

Also, how does it fill the case?

yah 2400 works great in my .357 Mags with 158gr heads, just a bit too hot for 223. Don't believe every thing you read.

I have used 2230 in a 223 with 40 v-max. For MY gun 26 1/4 grains was about 38 and change. Bought a ton of 2200 and get about 39 out of that. Plenty steamy but has worked well for long time. The 2230 was very accurate too.
