I've got scads of Nosler 40, 50, &55GR. Ballistic tips. I don't have the proper tools to measure bearing surface accurately. I can say that measuring OTB keeps my load consistent accuracy wise. I'm punching paper and Varminting out to 400 to 500 yds. Note: each of the bullet weights I'm shooting are of a single Lot#................ Mixed lot No.'s equal varying bearing surfaces. You'll also get small variances with-in a lot number as manufacturing tolerances "wander". Measuring OBT works well for my applicationAnyone have any idea what the bearing surface lengths are forthe the Nosler 224 40 ballistic tip and/or for the the Hornady 53 v-max?
Sorry for the delay robbor. O.K. I pushed a 40 grain Nosler Bal. Tip into a sized .223AI case backward to the point that the bullet was slightly jammed in the case mouth. Then measured with my Mitutyo's as closely as possible from case mouth to heel of bullet measurement was .173" ............... actual bearing surface would be a few thou. shorter. Hope this helpsYa rough with a caliper will give me an idea. thank you
