40-65 loading question

i just picked up a ruger #1 in 40=65 win ,it has a .410 bore and 18 twist and is a badger barrel.Im looking to purchase some bullets for reloading and it came with some 420 gr projectiles and im thinking they may not stabilize and was thinking 280-350 gr any subjections? Going with smokeless powder....thanks barry

An 18 twist is going to be real slow with a 420.

I've got a 16 twist 30" Douglas on my 40-65 and 400 grain PP and GG (paper patch and grease groove) are mostly stable to 600 using black powder only. I don't think any thing heavier will remain stable and know I'm pushing it with 400 grain GG at the velocity I can run them at. The PP loads can run faster (and are stable) as I can put a lot more powder in the case.

If I were you I'd look at something in the 320-350 grain range. I cannot help with load recommendations as I've never fired mine with smokeless. I'm assuming you were talking about cast bullets.

yea was thinking cast bullets but open to anything that will stabilize in 18 twist ,just prefer smokeless powder thanks for reply

If you are going to shoot relatively close, say 200 yds in, a 265 grain bullet will work. Lyman used to make a mold for one.
