39 gr BK results

Well went out to the range this morning to finally test the 39 gr BK'S.

I shot 12 three shot groups. 6 groups with IMR 8208 XBR and 6 groups of H4895. The H4895 out preformed the XBR in stardard deviation, extreme spread and group sizes.

The load I am probably going to settle on is 27.7 gr of H4895 which gave me 3750 fps and a group size of .260.

I'll try to get a picture posted later.

27.7g H4895 was also he best load in my cooper .204 with the 39g BK.(2years back)
I now have the 20TAC and a few days back I also tried the 8208 and 4895 with the 39g BK.
I ALSO TRIED THE 35G berger(moly) with the two powders.
I reached 4045fps with 35berger moly and 28.2g H4895.
I also pushed the 39g BK to 3950fps with the 8202(27.2g).
I would like to try the 39g with the 4895 but have not had the time.
3900fps was my goal with the 39g. / 4000fps was my goal with the 35g.
Both powder shoot very good in 20TAC.
PLEASE do not start your guns with these loads. All barrels, bullets, powders, primers and actions are different... SG

I also have developed a load with the 35gr Berger and 28.3gr of H4895 with a velocity of 3900 which grouped at about .300. I am super happy with that.

I haven't tried any moly's yet.

I couldn't believe that between the two powders I used to test the 39's how much difference the ES was. The 8208 was all over between 80-110 fps. While the 4895 stayed around 30-40 fps.

What did you end up for OAL for the 35s and 39s for the cooper

Here is the picture of the target.

I have always used some type of bullet comparator. OAL is good to know if you are loading ammo to fit in a clip or box magazine.
I dont remember the OAL for the .204 cooper 2 years back. Im sure I have that information in my records somewhere but where is the question...
I can tell you that most all my .20s shoot best with small land marks on the bullet.
The 35 bergers and 39 bk are the bullets I am loading in my .20TAC ...
I could never reach the FPS with the 204 that I am getting with the 20TAC.

I to use a bullet comparator too. OAL is important enough that they use it in all published data. While OAL is important when a mag use it also has other important functions.

Including my cooper 204 I have never seen a "standard " 204 cooper that didn't have a long free bore. If you have it great. If not so be it. I find it interesting you can remember the exact load and not the OAL.

Regardless Thanks.

No Benchmark or RL-10?

In my 204 there was something magical about the combination of R10x and 39 Sierras. With my Savage VLP 204 you were more likely to shoot a group in the .2s than one in the .4s and a majority of them were in the .3s --- still to this day the most accurate factory rifle I have ever shot. I have talked to no less than 5 other people that had results identical to mine with R10 and the Blitzkings.

Good info. If I get my hands on some I will give it a try! Not that I can complain about the results I'm getting now but it would be nice to say that "I can shoot consistently 1/4 moa!"

H4198 and 39 BK's are magic in my 20 Practical...about 3790 fps. Scary accurate, most 20 bores love the 39gr'ers for some reason.

Great group with H4895 boisblancboy :)

I developed a load myself that uses 30gr of RL-15 behind the 39gr Sierra BK's on my custom Rem 700 .204 Ruger. It shoots groups in the .3's at 200 yards and runs 'em at 3930 fps from a 26" barrel. Start at 29gr and work up if you want to give that powder a shot.

I've always had good luck with Hodgdon BLC-2 behind the 39gr BK's as well. That powder also shoots sub 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards using 30gr.
