357 Magnum 180 Handgun

Using a 180 grain LBT-GC looking for maximum performance in a 4" barreled S&W.

Currently I'm liking Lil' Gun powder around 14.0 grains in a Starline case with Winchester Magnum primer. Muzzle velocity is 1200 fps accuracy is decent.

I have used Lil' Gun with the same bullet with excellent results. Have shot numerous whitetails, great penetration.

Alliant MP-300 gives some eye popping velocity with 180s. My standard load for the GP-100 and blackhawks is 16.5 behind the Missouri 180 gr Pugnose

I cut a mold for a 178 truncated semi wad cutter. At the time,
I tried Hercules 2400 in my 6" S&W. Worked really well. After that
I picked up a Marlin in .357 to go with it. IMR-4227 worked best
in that longer barrel. The IMR-4227 shot decent in the Smith but
a bit dirty......I miss the older Hercules 2400 formulation of the 70's
and 80's.

2400 is best you can get

Not exactly sure what your asking from your post but 2400 is best 357 powder
While I agree 2400 is awesome I have also found N-110 to put bullets into the same hole from my Henry 357 and a friends S&W revolver. It may not be as fast as 2400 but it sure is accurate.

As a footnote. I tested 2400 in a 350 Legend with Maker bullets. Rounds in the same hole at 100 and ringing 6" steel at 300 9 of 10 shots. Group at 100 was .037"

That short of a barrel you need something a lot faster for burn rate. All of those MAGNUM powders hurt more than help. Look for something around HS6 or accurate #5 for speed.

For that barrel length, and looking for very good velocity, I would try AA9 or possibly Blue Dot. A step faster than the H110/MP300 and real close to the N110 mentioned. I use AA9 a lot in 327 Fed and 357 Magnum.

I only have one 4" 357 (686) and one 2 1/8" (60) so rarely do they see AA9 or the slower powders even though I have shot slow powders in the 686. Those loads tend to throw a nice fireball and make a ruckus. I don't even want to consider the Model 60 with H110!

I saw HS-6 mentioned and use it more in "medium" loads that are so easy to shoot and tend to be very accurate. It is definitely a powder I would not be without. Longshot is in a similar burning rate but I can't quite get it to where I have had HS-6, accuracy wise.

As a caster, I have quite a few LFN and LFN-GC molds in the heavy for caliber weights. I can get groups very close to the above mentioned Sierra Tournament Master JFP bullets (quite possibly the most accurate bullet I have ever shot out of 357's).

I quit Lil-Gun years back when I read articles and posts on revolver forums about forcing cone erosion attributed to it. I do know it is a powder that made my revolvers HOT. I had plenty of other powders so haven't missed it whether forcing cone erosion happens because of it or not.

I love 2400, but virtually no where to be found.
LGS had a 1 lb canister for $70, but I think it’s as old as the shop itself. :(
I’ve been using long time alternatives Win 296 and H-110 for many years now.
10-4 forgot i have lifetime supply . haven't looked for any in years.lol
