357.mag oal book vs actual oal per crimp groove

Post sometimes on a Facebook page but I'm usually scolded pretty heavy when I venture outside of exact book recipe. "This ain't cooking in the kitchen where you can change things on a whim" was one of the last comments. I'm sick of the peeing matches of experiance and knowledge. My head has been filled with increasing air space increases chance of detonation.. I've got some Acme dewc coated that's been hanging around for a few years I thought I'd load up while it's snowing. In order to crimp in the groove, I'll have about a .090 estimate longer coal than hodgdon website. Do I need to adjust powder charge for this increased length? Anyone have any powder suggestions? I've got bullseye, 231, H110, titegroup, trail boss (which is a plinking favorite of mine in the 44spl), some vintage unique and vintage herco.

BE or 231 are good choices. As to OAL you will be fine. Think about loading a 357 case with different profile bullets of the same weight. That air space is all over the place. Loading below MAX for most bullets gives you a pretty broad safety band. I doubt if you will challenge it with that bullet.

One can always use a bulkier powder if the worry is the detonation pressure excursion that has never been duplicated in a test facility to my knowledge. Unique would be my choice in that case. I love 110/296 for my rip snorter jacketed loads BTW.

Longer than book you wont ever run into issues.. Shorter than book can become a problem.. But it would need to be quite a bit shorter than book.

Edit.. I have used 231 with DEWC....

With as fast as pistol powders are detonation is not an issue. It's only when the flame across the top of the powder can outrun the burn of the powder column. That's not a pistol powder possiblity.

Regarding the case overall length question. If it fits in the chamber it's fine. That is why they list the case overall length, so that it would fit in S.A.M.M.I. spec. chambers. Max length is 1.290 and trim to length is 1.285. Hodgdon is listing the "trim to" length.

Ok I was assuming c.o.l. was cartridge not case. Makes sense. Would figure length pertaining to brass would be trim length.

I may be confused, but aren't double end wad cutters seated even with or a little below the case mouth then crimped? The grooves were for lube before powder coating was a thing. Haven't owned a 38/357 for years, but for some reason 2.5 or 2.7 gr of Bullseye is stuck in my brain with 148s.

You had to load them that way for the Smith and Wesson model 52. A semi auto in 38 spl.

As well as the Colt 1911 Midrange gun and Fred Schmidt's short cylinder PPC revolvers. I load all of my wadcutters flush with the case mouth with a very slight roll crimp.
