350 Legend

Anybody have any thoughts on this round Winchester just introduced?
https://www.outdoorhub.com/news/2019/01/21/shot-2019-winchester-new-350-legend/

I don't normally pay too much attention to new factory rounds and wouldn't expect this one to take the shooting world by storm but it seems like it fills a decent size hunting niche and checks enough boxes that it could develop a decent following. I've taken a few deer with a 357 Max and it was pretty effective at moderate ranges.

Kind of like a 30-30 for your AR15, as I suspect barrels will come out fairly quickly for the cartridge. I look forward to it. Made up a barrel for my AR about 10 years ago, and turned the rims off of 357 max brass and cut an extractor groove. Worked with it for a bit, but magazines were the problem and shelved it. 357 max has decent performance out of a rifle. Have a rechambered Ruger #1 in 357max. 200gr bullets at 2200fps.

Keep your shots under 200yds and it should work well on deer and hogs. Would be a good round for the new shooters and those states that restrict cartridges to straight wall/length restrictions.

It will probably find a niche somewhere.
The niche is all of the "shotgun" states are starting to allow straight wall cartridges of 1.800 length and less. It will be a hit in those states, the 450B is already a big hit and this round is faster, less recoil, and the best part for many is the ammo is going to be about half the cost of 450B.

Do we have any idea what kind of velocities this ammo will product out of a 16" or 20" barrel? Im unfamiliar with 357 Max ballistics. Winchester's claim to be the fastest straight-wall cartridge has me wondering.

Here's some ballistics for you. I'm disappointed by the BC on the 150gr bullet but for most hunters it will work well

I built the same thing using starline 223 basic brass trimmed to 1.770 and shooting a 180gr Fury spitzer bullet. Out of a 700 action with a 24" barrel I get 2500 fps and accuracy easily into an inch. 1680 powder and about .150 seating depth.
This round does seem to perform well beyond what it should be able to do both on game and in actual numbers. This one will be AR compatible so expect less power but still a nice little round.

While I wasn't able to get as high of velocities as some people are getting out of the 357 Max, my experience was similar in that it just felt like performance on game was always better than it seemed like it should've been based on the modest velocities. Maybe there's more to it but some of that seemingly outsized performance I attributed to bullets that were well matched for the velocity (Hornady 180 XTP/180 SSP).

I mean, I gotta give them credit. There was a niche market for a hunting round that meets specific criteria for a few states, and they went for it. It's not a whiz-bang tactical round, it's just a purpose built round.

I've been looking to find a round that I can run suppressed for Ohio deer hunting. I hate having to wear ear plugs when doing drives, it really slows down my "early alert" when we jump deer. I have a 45/70 guide gun now that I love, and it's perfect for what we do, but after one or two shots the ole ears start to bleed.

That being said, I don't want to buy a purpose built suppressor for a 45/70 or 450 and have it be a paperweight for any other use. I'd be able to get away with something that was more well rounded, Silencerco Hybrid / Mystic X etc.

If I were you id get a set of electronic ear muffs or ear plugs they will do exactly what you want for way cheaper than a suppressor

Been through every iteration of them besides the 2k custom in ear electronics. They all leave a lot to be desired. Wind noise over the course of a day with amplified muffs are probably worse on your ears then gun shots. Not to mention, getting ripped off your head, getting wet, having your ears hurt from having muffs on all day, etc etc.

A few thoughts.

How will the straight case function in AR15? Not much taper there.

Thinking the limitation will be case capacity and powders like WW296/H110 will be required to produce enough gas to cycle an AR. Thoughts?

This could be a real nice gas-check cast booolit cartridge for deer in mature hardwoods where shots won't get near that 200yd mark.

I am pretty well married to the 16" 6.8SPC for in the woods. But, if I hadn't already gone that route, I'd have to look at this real close.
