35 Whelen PET LOADS

I am looking for some 35 Whelen pet loads. Im interested in using and 200 gr and 225 gr pills.
If you have any experience with this caliber please share some advise.

Thank You
Ryan

For 225 Sierra gamekings, I found 56.0 gr of IMR4895 did really well. I liked 180 speer hotcors at 59.1gr H4895 a lot more, though. It was crossing at 2200fps at 200yards. This is out of a T/c with an eabco barrel on it, and I'm not real sure of the book values on this. So, work up at your own risk, don't blow your face off, etc...

IMR-4064 may just knock your socks off. It has shot superbly in every -06 based cartridge I've tried it in. Start conservatively at 52gns or so and work up.

EDIT:
If you wanna go with a light load for target and fun, IMR-3031 always gave great results down around 45gns.

These older IMR powders are a great standard for any loads which feature hunting type bullets of the cup and core design. I tested the usual run of powders with the 225 Nosler Partition and found that 3031, 4064 and 4895 all performed well when I was nearing the upper end of the curve. These combinations are the 'no fail' hunting loads which don't require anything fancy but perform every time. You don't need any custom throat or freebore either. Use the SAAMI reamer then load and shoot.

And just in case you need a greater selection, Norma N-202 and Ramshot X-Terminator perform well also. For some reason I wound up with a metric ton of Win. 748 which is also a fine candidate if you find you have some hiding on your powder shelf.

Push comes to shove, I'd load 100 cartridges with the 225 Nosler Partition over IMR-3031 and be set to hunt nearly everything in North America for a long time!:D

58.5gr of R15, fed210M, Remington case and a 225gr Accubond on top. Always shot extremely well in the cold. Opened up when it was warmer out

Worked up a varget load in Nosler cases. I'd have to look but I think between like 60-62gr all shot great.

Those were in a Remington pump gun....so work up carefully. I don't know that either are really hot...but it's tougher to tell in a pump gun as the heavier loads self eject.

Mine [bolt action Savage/W an Adams & Bennet Barrel] likes Heavier bullets . The 250 grain Hornady spire point #3520 , once fired RP brass, CCI reg. Lg primer, IMR 4064 you will find happiness above 54.5 grains.. PM me if you want the exact load I use. mikeinct

59 grains of Varget has the 225 grain Partition or Accubonds pushing 2750 fps, and both these bullets hit the same POI at 100 yards. Another nice option was 250 Speer Hotcors under CFE 223 62-64 grains, pushing 2700 fps and very accurate. Working on 225 grain Sierras right now and CFE 223, could be a real nice combo.

Years back IMR 3031 & 4064 were my favored powders with 200s & 250s using LC67 brass. There were no 225s back then. Further testing added the 4895s & especially RL15 along with the newly released 225s a few years later in LC69 & RP brass. In the last couple of years PP2000MR has proven outstanding with 200gr reaching 3000fps in my 22" Whelen with Lapua '06 brass necked up. Accuracy is on par or even better than with any of the other powders mentioned. It was a very warm load in this particular lot of brass, so I backed it down about 50fps. Nosler & Sierra 225s also responded well with PP2000. There is tested data for this powder in Speer #15 & Sierra VI. CFE223 is another of the newer wonder powders with data in the above mentioned manuals but it didn't behave as nicely as PP2000 did for me. YMMV.

I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the mentioned powders for a hunting load. The Whelen doesn't seem to be all that picky.

I settled on XBR 8208. No need to chrono my loads as this is a Canadian brush deer gun and a PA bear gun. Accuracy with 200 grain Accubonds out of a Remington classic is absolutely superb. She cuts holes at 100 and is a true 1/2" gun which is impressive for a factory Remmy and 200 grain bullets.

Among other sources, check out Ken Waters' book of compiled articles from his "Pet Loads" columns over the years. If you don't have a copy, imo you should.

Do not be afraid to use 52-54gr . of 3031 with 180’s & 200’s . Never had a problem in my 760 REM. Slide .

Been playing with loads over the winter, the old standard was 59.5 grains of Varget over a 225 grain Accubond, Partition, or Sierra....almost same POI @ 100 yards! very consistent. Played with RL-15 previously and had good results but the latest has been CFE 223. 2800 fps with 67 grains under a 225 grain Accubond or Sierra! 24 inch gain twist barrel, and the rifle is light, recoil is substantial at this upper load. I also worked up a load with the 250 grain Speer Hotcor, beautiful, 2650 fps under 64 grains of CFE223. I have started to play with the 200 grain TTSX but I have tones of Sierras, Accubonds, Partitions loaded up. I was shooting the bullets into some test media (wet newspaper & simulated shoulder scapula) no bad bullets in the bunch.

Sorry for the late response. I went out today to zero my .35 Whelen with my favorite load. Shot this group at 100 yds with FC brass (reformed), Winchester LR primer. 225 gr Nosler AccuBond over 57.5 gr of IMR 4064.

How did the 200gr ttsx testing go? Where they the BTs?
