.338 Lapua. Curious about your loads. Can you make this combo group .350 at 100 yards, and then still be good at 1200 yards? I'm asking for a friend. He is using Retumbo powder, 300 SMK, Lapua brass. Forgot what primer. Thanks in advance.

He really needs to develop the load that his rifle likes...
Understand that.....just curious, since I know nothing about .338, is it possible to accomplish what I mentioned? If so, what would be a good starting development load?

Pretty hard to get .350 at 100. They are known to shoot good way out there. The big bullets seem to shoot better at distance. Mine will shoot 5 shots in 4 inches at 1000 but will shoot .500 or bigger at 100. I shoot R33 and 300 Bergers. The Bergers shot smaller then the Sierra. Matt

I have used both H1000 & RL 33 in my 338 . Have got better results out of H 1000 with 300 gr bullets at longer distances. I wouldn't worry about trying to get small groups at 100 yards . I develop my loads and 300 yards. Like Larry said Can your
shooter handle the big Magnum

If it's so hard to handle a big magnum as some of you keep repeating, then do you think the British Military is stupid for choosing the 338 Lapua as it's standard sniper rifle? Remember, by making it their standard they force all new comers to learn off the platform... Don't forget our militaries 300Win Mag... Just asking...

I believe our military is adapting to the 338 also. One well known long range gunsmith has been working with them for years. At Quantico they have many gunsmiths. The 300 Win is Not used as much as one would think. They are using a lot of custom stuff. Matt

Speaking of using custom stuff, I wonder how many special operations groups have tried the 6.5x47L.. I've heard rumors.. I also seen a video on You Tube where a Russian soldier was shooting a 6.5x47L along side a 300 Win Mag. I believe?? The use of an American cartridge is what surprised me..

Helped a shooting buddy develop a load for his 338LM Savage M112. Bought a quantity of H1000 and 285 and 300 grain SMKs. Both shot great at 1000 yds and the 285's went the full mile. Norma brass, CCI250 and somewhere around 86 grains H1000, IIRC.

With that brick sized bullet, it was stupid easy to ring the bell at 1000 yds, but watching the huge SS shock wave as the bullet flew to the distant target was a thing of beauty

I wish the Slo-Mo guys would get some good footage of long distance shooting. That'd be really cool.
