338 RUM

Hello,

I plan to make a 338 RUM for a friend on a Rem 700 receiver for long range shooting., with a good brake ! )

Does anybodies have tried this caliber for this purpose ?

Is it a good combo ?

Ive got a 300 rum in a 26" sporter, she really kicks. Im sure even with a heavy gun there will be substantial kick. I really dont see the need to go to 338. Ive heard that the brake blast can be pretty bad also. over on longrangehunting there are quite a few guys with 338 rum improved and lap based wildcats.

I have a custom 338 RUM sporter with a K&P barrel on a Sako action. It is my favorite gun.

It's taken about a half a dozen elk and really puts them down. Longest shot was just under 400 yds with a Swift A-frame on a bull. It wasn't the greatest comparison on bullet performance because it was facing me and I hit it under the eye. Probably a lucky shot for me, shooting off of a stump, but the gun is that accurate.

The last few animals were taken with Nosler Accubonds which are devastating.

One thing though, it kills at one end and maims at the other. If you are going without a muzzle brake, figure on it coming after you on the bench.

Bought a Sendero-SF from the first production run, the extractor sucks but other than that as a chambering it is excellent. Very accurate, when the barrel was fresh it would print five shot groups in the .3s. If I managed to control the recoil for five shots. I put a Vais brake on it which helped a lot in the recoil department. Several powders worked very well but RL-25 was the best by far for accuracy.

Thanks for your answears.

In fact, I've chambered 2 RUM barrels yet :

One in .300 RUM that works really well only with Sierra 240 grs at 3000 f/s, and one in 7 RUM that doesn't works well, I think because it's too overbore to shoot VLD bullets...

Maybe the 338 RUM will shoot better, especially at long ranges, 1200 - 1500 meters )...

We plan to shoot Lapua Scenar 250 grs and Sierra 300 grs.

Well, I do have a .300 RUM built on a Winchester action as a hunting/varminting rifle. It could stand to weigh another 10 lbs or so and a muzzle brake. Makes a great coyote gun with a 125 Nolser BT though, best accuracy has been around 3850 fps or there abouts.

Back to the .338 though. The 250 Scenars are just fine to 1,000 and since my come-ups match my ballistics program I'll make the assumption that the bullets would be solidly supersonic to 1600 yards. My neck of the woods though there aren't too many chances to shoot to 1,000 let alone past that. The accuracy node is right around 2950 fps which seems typical for VLDs from Lapua. Same as my 6.5 X 284.

Best advice is use the most efficent brake you can lay your hands on and build a heavy rifle.

I picked up one of the Sendero's in 338 Ultra & have a KDF brake installed.
Prints moly'd Sierra 300's in the 3's @ 2830fps
A 28" Bbl would be sweet!!!!

My winter project is going to be a .338 Ultra on the 300 case on a Rem Titanium action.
A 7Lb. Dall Sheep,Caribou,Moose,Bear,Bison up here in AK.
