This is kind of a mixed thread. My Son finished up his new 338 Norma mag in preparation shooting the Night Force ELR match in Wyoming. After some testing and a trip to Thunder Valley shooting out to one mile getting some rounds thru it he started really trying to tweak it.
It just wouldn't tweak down to what he wanted no matter what he did. A call to a buddy (past ELR World Record Holder) narrowed it down to copper buildup. Chris had cleaned it but not using the right stuff to eliminate the copper.
Man, a world of difference, Randy said about every 140 rounds or so it had to be deep scrubbed. This was his first ELR CF match and finished 38th overall out of nearly 300. His buddy got 9th. Chris was using 285gr. Hornady which got a few grins since most everyone was using solids or some type of Berger but they shoot great.
His high spot of the match was being 1 of only 4 that cleaned the farthest target stage at 2150 yards including a first round hit. One of the others were the overall match winner from Bryan Litz's team. Interesting match but both had fun and learned a lot.
The other part of this thread is he tried his new suppressor. It's a 338 Ultra from Thunder Beast. The video below is his first shot, no first round pop. I was amazed how quiet it was, nearly the same as his suppressed 6.5x47.
Another note, he shot well over 100 rounds at the Night Force event using a SuperBeast muzzle brake from Muzzle Brakes & More. After the match he said there was no discomfort at all and said it was nearly as comfortable as shooting a 308. I will say that you DEFINATELY will find it uncomfortable to be beside or even slightly angled behind it when it goes off. It will make you consider moving a few shooting positions away but he could watch his trace and hits/misses at all distances which is important when you are on your own to make adjustments within a short time limit.
Just shows the bigger guns can shoot well and be comfortable to shoot. Expense of components hits the pocketbook but if you want to reach out and touch something it's pretty cool.
