338 Norma Mag....and "loading " the bipod

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
My 338 jumps pretty bad each round fired.

First, that's cuz I'm about 4 grains of H1000 over the recommended max of 85gr..... I got that load data directly from Berger Boolits theirselves. So....I'll be backing that down..... :)

But I'm thinking some proper bipod technique could make a difference.

School me.... do you "pre-load" your bipods to better control recoil? How's that work?

Thanx.

I load my small ones up some. I have a 338 lapua that danced so much on a regular cheap bipod or harris bipod that i had to refit it to use my remple bipod, now it gravy.

So imo with the bigger cals that like to dance you need more of a competition style bipod that has a much wider footprint and is stronger..

I would highly recommend a DVD by Jacob Bynum from "Rifles Only" entitled "Rifles Only Precision Rifle Volume 1: Fundamentals". The information on this DVD is well worth the 39.95 where he talks at length and practically with good video coverage of how to "drive the rifle". I spent some time with Jacob and bought the DVD playing it over and over. It made a difference regarding sight picture from my creedmoor up to my 338 Lapua. I think Frank Galli with Sniper's Hide has a number of youtube videos and DVDs as well as paid videos online, but I could never get the "Scout" website to interface with my Mac. If you get the Rifles Only DVD you will not be disappointed. When it comes to my 375 cheytac, the fundamental remain crucial but two additional items made this rifle a real pussycat to shoot: 1) an elite iron bipod displacing the center of axis of rotation for the recoil in line with the barrel, and 2) a custom made mercury filled recoil reducer placed behind the bipod attachment under the gun's fore-end (C&H mercury recoil suppressor).

Regards,
Dan

I am shooting 300NM 230 otm and just took my 9x13 LN S harris off for the same reason

I run 89 grains of h1000 in my 13# edge. With a fully loaded harris and have No trouble at all. Without a full load on the bipod she jumps. Crowd up on it and relax, your body weight will do the rest.

As far as the Mac and "Scout" goes try the Chrome browser instead of the standard Mac browser. It works for me. Like both this site and that one both real well. Lots of great info in both places.

i'm only 10# duplicated the sendaro with the HS Stock, pretty light, I do wish I had a beefier stock

10# with optic and bipod? Thats a really light 338. mine is 11#ish before sling, optic and bipod.....loaded weight is 13 or 13.5#.... I have a tikka t3 in wsm that would be a better comparison to any featherweight magnum and it bennifits equally well from a full pre loaded bipod. Really makes a huge difference on anything.
EDIT........300NM

My primary carry gun in 338 edge only sports a 24" "magnum contour" aka heavy sporter so most of it's dry weight is do to it's (hammer proof) choate tactical stock. Worth the extra weight, best money I've ever spent.

10lb w/o bipod. I took off bipod and hitting a lot better on my steel, took one shot today at 458 and smack on with 7moa 200yd zero. bags no bipod, I had to take that off, its hammer time!

I absolutely could be loading it wrong. I tried fwd load but I am breaking of swivel studs., I am on my 3rd and had to change (drill out the old thread)(3/16 then 3/8 for nut as HS changed the thread pattern) and epoxy a nut for needed sling, I can get away without a bi-pod as I otherwise will have bags or pack.
I was going to order Shawn Carlock hardened kit but never heard back from them, buisy, i'm sure.
ill try to dig up a gun pic,
sorry lost patients with photobucket!!!!!!!!

I have an Atlas V8 on my 19 lb. .30-338Norma Imp & load them legs up! The APA Fat Bastard brake takes care of the rest. Yes, rifle mass definitely helps. But I can watch my bullet trace, all the way to the target, if conditions allow. IE, rifle stays dead ballz on target, even with 91gr of Retumbo gettin' sparked off...

When Atlas first released the (much larger) 5-H bipod, I picked one up for that big rifle.. Thought it would make a good thing, better. Only took a few shooting sessions to realize that the (smaller) V8 was plenty of bipod for that rifle, and I swapped back to it. The 5-H is a beast! Just too much for what/how I like to shoot...

If you're breaking swivel studs, I'd say something's wrong? As much as I 'load' my big Norma, it still ain't enough force to break a stud?

Maybe look into mounting an Atlas BT-17 pic rail under the forend, and mount bipod with a pic rail adaptor? That's how all my bipods are interfaced w/ rifles, save for a couple lil' hunting rigs...
