338 Laupa help..

I just bought a rem 700 .338 Laupa factory gun, but has been somewhat accurized, action trued and blueprinted, ptg bolt and fluted and tubb recoil lug and muzzle break..

I think it's a 1-10twist? Anybody help?

And looking for the best bullet that will fly long range and be accurate and still drop animals ;) I want 1 bullet for hunting and compitetion, powder charge and oal would be great.. thanks for any help!!

Can't help with the load data, but target/hunting are two different applications. There are some bullets that span both, but it can be touchy. I've been running 285 gr. Hornady Match in my 338/378. (They also make a 250) There's also the 250 gr. and 300 gr. Sierra MK's which are a staple. Then there's the 300 gr. Berger. The Berger is pretty thin though. The jackets on the Hornady's seem to be pretty stout, although I haven't cross sectioned one. I wouldn't have much hesitation on using it on game. There are also some other offerings like the long range Accubonds (currently unavailable) that would serve you well for long distance and be great killers. Obviously I'm skirting the whole ethics issue of using match bullets on game, that's another discussion. Point is the 3 bullets mentioned above are all proven to be accurate, and I know more than a few folks have had good luck with the Sierra's on game. I expect the Hornady's would do just as well.

For me, I still run a Barnes for hunting and the Hornady's when I'm target shooting in my 338.

Yah I have retumbo so I will try that and maybe some 300 gr Sierra hpbt I think those should fly well, thanks for your guys help

I've been shooting my 338 Lapua since 2002. 300 gr SMKs over 82.6 gr Reloader 22 with Federal 215 Match primer and Lapua brass. Good luck. Scott M Bainbridge

Mine has 1300 rounds down the tube. Still shoots 1/2 moa and better and 100 yards and can still shoot sub 3 inch at 600 yards. Lot's of down range punch. Scott

Let me address the last ? re: muzzle brake---perhaps I am just really recoil averse but personally I cannot see shooting my 338 LM (AR-30) without one.

Yes, you need a good pair or two of ear protection but the recoil is truly down to the 308 range with it-I would not even consider it from the bench without it.

As far as loads go, I have been quite happy with Sierra 300 gr HPBT over either Retumbo or H1000
I am getting in the 2570's fps Quite accurate out to 600 - that is as far as I have stretched them.

Always looking for something new so I may go and try the Reloader powders and see what shakes.
