338 Lapua?

There has been much written about building a 338 Lapua on a 700 action. Bottom line, please don't do it. Lug set back and more. Dan Lilja wrote more than a little on this subject. Go with a custom action only.

My $.02,
Jim Hardy

yes it can be done--remington builds an m-24sws variant in .338 lapua. but, as ji, said, you are better off getting a custom receiver for one of these builds. look up the different receivers made by BAT. these receivers are much stronger than the rem 700.

That sounds like a solid piece of advice. I believe I will look into a custom action, I don't really enjoy the thought of a gun going boom out the wrong end.

Thanks fellas,

Matt

A member of my club bought a sporter weight Sako in .338 Lapua. Didn`t take long for the stock to split under the recoil. The laughter from Sako is still echoing in his ears when he tried to use the warranty to get a new stock. Apparently there is some sort of fine print in the warranty regarding this cartridge.

He has spliced some sort of plywood section into the stock to replace the damaged section. I suddenly develop a hearing problem when he asks me if I want to see the repair.

You should look into the 338 Edge if you want 338 L out of a R700. The 338 Edge is the 300 RUM necked up to the 338, it has a little more case capacity than the 338 L and uses the standard mag bolt face. I am having a 338 Edge built as we speak.

Another 338 option is the 338 Norma which gives the same level of performance in a R700 compatible case.

My two cents,

+ 1 on EDGE It does Everything the LM does and a lil more...Can be safely built on most standard actions (Savage / Rem).

Due to the case Head size, I would not build a LM on a standard 700 Aaction / Bolt .

I have heard good things about the RUM case. Does it have the same bolt face as a 300 Win Mag?

Thanks fellas,

Matt

I would not build either a .338 Lapua or .338 Norma on a 700, or any other 1.35" diameter receiver. Both the above cartidges (and the big Weatherbys) were developed from the .416 Rigby parent case, with a strengthened web to handle higher chamber pressures.

IMO hogging a 700 out that far doesn't leave enough metal in the barrel/receiver, the boltface really has to be opened up considerably, a new extractor installed and a fair amount of metal removed to feed the cartridges.

In comparison, aftermarket makers like Stiller, Surgeon, BAT, Nesika etc make larger diameter receivers to take the larger diameter cases based on the .416.

I've got a double square bridge Mauser in .416 Rigby and it makes the 700 look puny in comparison.

The RUMs, based on the smaller diameter .404 Jeffreys case (I have a .300 and .338 RUM) is about as large as I'd care to go in a 1.35" receiver, and they have rebated rims to use the standard magnum boltface.

Admittedly Weatherby does chamber the big cases in a 1.35" diameter receiver, but they use the nine lug bolt on those which seems to help prevent lug setback.

My opinion, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should actually do it...

Been pleased with my .338 RUM. 3030 fps with 250 Nosler Accubond and H1000 from a factory 26" barrel and accuracy has been very good.

And I might add that my .338 RUM pushes a 250 gr Lapua Scenar along at 2950 fps (the best accuracy node) with a less than max powder charge out of a 26" barrel and remains supersonic past 1500 yards.

I wouldnt build a 338 LM on a 700 either..Not to smart. I would however do a 338 Edge from a 700. As mentioned above it was designed to work with a 700 action.
