338 lapua necked to 6mm ?

Has anyone ever heard of this combination I have a 30-338 lapua and was just wondering if I neck a 338 to 6mm would this be a disaster if I'm correct the water capacity on the 338 case is about 114 gr. that is a lot more capacity than the dashers or brdx . I look forward to any input from you wildcat gurus

It would be a big barrel burner with that small of hole. We ad a 7mm on a Lapua case and it shot out pretty quick. It was fast but I believe the accuracy went in 500 rounds. Matt

Awful lot of horse power in a small hole.......

Don`t let me discourage you though....

You know, for a given bore diameter, there is a point of diminishing returns in powder capacity. I think that your proposed wildcat might have a toe over that line.

Order your barrel/BARRELS by the truckload. ps. Your Smith is going to be HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY ;D ;D ;D

If you want a fast 6mm I would think a 6-284.That is as fast as you need. Look at what the Dashers do at distance like 1000 yards. They are hard to beat for accuracy. The groundhog doesn't know if it has 20 minutes dialed in the scope or 23 minutes. Matt

Howdy !

I review an " expansion ratio " chart, provided by ballistician Homer Powley.
The chart lists expansion ratios of 4 - 14, as a guide.

Intersection of calibre " lines " and charge lines on the chart, render an expansion ratio value.
Charge wt of 90gr is listed as maximum on the chart.

What Is found:
In an ( example ) 28" barrel, and given a 114gr H2O capacity; an expansion ratio of around 3.5 is indicated. This ratio graphs-out as lying outside the bounds of the provided chart.
In other words, a notional " 6 - 338L " would be grossly over-bore... to put it mildly.
Use of a longer barrel, would not help matters; all that much.

To arrive @ a more-acceptable expansion ratio for a 6mm wildcat; a smaller case capacity seems warranted.

With regards,

I couldn't agree any more. I thought some of the longer-cased Lazzeroni cartridges were overbore, your LM version would make them appear efficient. ;D

I'm sure that almost every re-loading website on ALGORE's interweb will have load data and pet loads for the 6x338L!! ;) ;D

I think you should build it. :) I've thought about a 6 wsm or saum. Might still do it, might not.

Aaron, the Lapua Mag dwarfs the WSM and SAUM cases. His proposed wildcat would be in about a 4-tier level higher powder capacity category than the ones you've mentioned.

According to the latest bullet technology being Barnes over every thing else and having the barrel get a coating of Melonite those kind of problems should be solved ;D
Please correct me if I’m wrong 8).

"overbore" is a completely worthless word/term and should never be used in wildcatting, expiremental wildcat cartridges are what drives further developements and refinements in propellants, new high energy, temp stable powders are a direct result from wildcatters pushing cartridge designs to extremes in search of higher velocities with heavy high bc bullets ....

if everyone in the world used the 9mm, 223 Rem and 308 Win it would be a dull boring existence ....

This goes way beyond experimenting for the greater good. What if he did it and using math and quickload or something to get a starting point and with the pressure it is one thing but the expansion of all that powder burning may very well expand any bullet so much in the bore that it would move correctly down the barrel. If you do this make sure you clamp it to a shooting table and have a string about 50 yards long and get behind a dirt mound and then pull the trigger. My feeling will it may blow up on the first shot. The 6-284 is a great idea for someone wanting a fast 6mm but the 338 necked to 6mm is totally insane.
