Plus 1^ i have a 338 Lapua and a 300 RUM, (parent case for 338 edge) and the quality and strength of the Lapua brass far outweighs any extra velocity the edge has over the Lapua. There is a member on LRH that has 15 firings on his 338 Lapua brass, expect around 4-5 firings on Remington brass and 15+ for Lapua.montana_native said:I own both and prefer the Lapua to the 338 RUM. For me, Lapua brass quality is a huge advantage over the 338 RUM. I have one small lot of brass that has 17 reloads on it (91 gr of H-1000 and a 300 grain SMK) and the primer pockets are just starting to get loose. No way the Remington or Nosler brass will do that. There is no brass prep required with the Lapua either. The 338 RUM requires primer pocket/flash hole work, sometimes neck turning, etc. When you stand on it hard, figure 4-5 reloads before you lose primer pockets. Break it down to brass tacks, and the reloading components (if you load your own) are a wash.
94 grains of Retumbo and a 300 grain Berger OTM gets me to 2860 fps out of a 28" barrel. That's essentially 338 "Edge" performance (I've had one of those too). The 338 RUM lags behind by about 50 fps in my experience.
Accuracy difference between the two is negligible. The bolt face diameter for the Lapua seems to deter a lot of folks from the 338 Lapua. They are both great chamberings and I don't feel one could go wrong with either.
