338 Lapua load test round 1 - fail...

Went to the range to test some loads today in the new custom build 338 lapua.... tested retumbo and h1000 with 300gr otms bergers... my normal shooting place i couldnt get to today.... so i went ahead and tried a node test at this other range at 300 yards... fail... they wouldnt let me go to the target and mark each shot... so i had to spot it and write it down... didnt have enough colors of sharpies to color the bullets either... at 300 yards everything grouped and ended up not being big enough to tell the nodes very easily at all... im going to have to node test at 600 to 1000 yards with this big ol boom stick... only thing i could figure out was its going to shoot good lol... cuz every load i threw together to shoot is good enough to shoot a deer in the head at 300 yards...

My .338LM is a cheap Savage one. Doesn't really shoot that well (about 1MOA). But I didn't buy it for hunting or benchrest. I bought it to feel the big boom, and hear the big boom, and it does that in spades. The components are too expensive for me to do much load workup, and I think the .338 is just trying to rip that cheap undersized Savage action apart every time I fire it, so it sits in the safe except for on days when I want an E Ticket Ride.

find some cheap cases , Hornady or others and get some 300 gr. berger or sierras and some H1000 and Boom , and accurate. Almost a guarantee. ;)

I am using expensive Lapua cases with expensive 300gr Lapua Scenars, with Retumbo powder. It's accurate enough for what I bought it for.

I don't *want* to shoot it a lot. It makes my sinuses ring when I fire it and it pisses off other people nearby at the range.

Those component so expensive.

It also do not comfortable to shooter to test load up with this caliber.

Let say 50 rd or more for load up.

If you think that pisses them off crack off a 50 BMG with a 800 grain bullet and 226 grains of powder using a clam shell brake. You don't make many friends while at the bench.

I'd like to shoot ONE ROUND out of one of those. Then I'd stop by the hospital on my way home and have my shoulder reset and get some heroin for the headache.

The testosterone is getting pretty deep around here. Where'd I pack away my hip waders?

338LM feels like a bolt action .223?

.50BMP?

Sheesh.

Haha, I laughed out loud on that one, Michael. No doubt!

One way to do a ladder test when you can't mark each round is to use different targets for each shot. Put a small dot or draw cross hairs on the target as an aiming point on each piece of paper and use one dot per loading. You shoot all rounds of the same loading at the same target, when you are done you take each target down and use a caliper for measuring the vertical difference above the aiming point and find your sweet spots in the same way. I use this method when I do ladder tests at 1,000 yards.

You need to get out more. Most companies could only dream of making a muzzle brake as good as the armalite.

I let kids shoot my Lapua Improved. My grandson has shot 3 bucks in his 3 years of hunting. He is only 13 now. I free recoil it. Matt

On the "not enough sharpies" issue'

I use 5 colors. So, there is the first 6 shots down range.

I then color 1/2 of the bullet with one color and the other 1/2 with a second. That will get you to over 25 shots.

So..red/ blue

red/ green

blue/ green

green/ black

Black/ yellow...etc.....etc...etc...

I even used to shoot matches with multi-colored bullets. I could then tell what was happening down range...ie...a let off or push that I missed, or just a flyer for any givin 10 shot string. Just keep a cheat sheet to keep track of the firing order.

Do not color any more than the tip...do not color ANY of the bearing surface!! If you have a hard time reading the colors on target, simply use Q-Tips dipped in rubbing alcohol.

You simply need to find a longer range to shoot ladders. All you are doing a shorter ranges is getting some trigger time.

I have a AR 30 in 338 Lapua

My pet load 92.0 of H1000 with Berger 300gr Elite

I replaced that rear stock with a AR carbine extension and SOPMOD stock.
