.338 Lapua barrel twist rate

I am building a .338 Lapua rifle and want to shoot the 300 grn bullet. When I call to order a Krieger barrel they suggested a 1-.953 over a 1-.10. Any thoughts?

1-10 will work just fine. As a matter of fact a 1-11 will work. The 1-9.53" and 9.3" are for shooting subsonic rounds.

I'm fairly new to your board, but not to .338 Lapua. The consensus among ELR tactical shooters (count me among them) would seem to recommend 1:9.3 and even 1:9 to get the best results with 300 grain Scenars and SMKs. Check with the ELR boys at Sniper's Hide for more information. The folks at Krieger are pretty savvy about giving good advice regarding their own products, too. The last thing they want is a dissatisfied customer.

I think you will find the twist they suggest is a 1:9.35"

Having said that, there is a definite preference for 1:10 in many camps. The new 300 Berger looks very interesting and I tend to think it will like a tight twist, so i would personally go with the 9.35" twist.

I am shooting the 300 grains SMK out of my AIAWSM 338 LM with a 1:11" twist. It stabilizes easily out to 1700 yards. Have not tried longer. Having said that, most 1:10" will not have any problem with the 300 grains pills, whether SMK or scenars. If you are planning to shoot some exotic monolithic bullet in the future, then it's a different story. Good luck. Be prepared to feed it big dollar bills every time you pull the trigger.

When in doubt...call Sierra. When I did I was told they'd stabilize in a 12 twist at 338L velocities.
