338 Edge

Well fella's looks like it's going to become a reality after all! it might take me sometime to get everything together but hey it will happen.

Couple of questions, for dies is everyone just using 338RUM with a .100 spacer under it?

Do you just use the expander ball from the die or something else to size up the neck? if something else what are you using?

For powder and primers what are you having luck with? I plan on shooting the 300gr. SMK's.

Sorry for all the questions I'm just trying to get a head start on this and pick up things that won't crater the bank account. Any help would sure be appreciated. Later,

Kirk

Try this article by Shawn Carlock, the father of the Edge, it will answer a lot of your questions

Thank you sir! I was playing around over there but just found a mess of goodies nothing solid like this, I must have been doing something wrong. Again thanks! Later,

I used Redding custom for the full length and neck dies and just a 338 Ultra for the seater w/o the shim.

I used Sinclair's .338 expander mandrel to neck them up, cause I had one. Otherwise, get a tapered expander ball for the Redding.

Federal 215 magnums are designed for lighting gobs of powder. The 300 SMK's weren't around when I had mine, so I only played with the lighter weights 200's and 210's.

Shawn may be the father of the 'Edge' in name, but the concept of necking up the 300 Ultra to .338 was done before him.

Yea I know that, probably the only Wildcats that are can be attributed to a single person are the 'Gibbs', and then I am not 100% sure of that.

alf, how does the Sinclair mandrel work? I mean I have the idea of what it does but how do you use it? die, hammer, arbor press, C4, see where I'm going with this, I have never used nor seen one of the mandrels most all of my necking up or down I have just used the dies. Later,

The manrels are for neck turning, but can be put in their 7/8ths x 14 body for necking up and/or expanding in your press.

You'd be just as well served by getting a tapered expander ball in your die set. Works just as well, just keep the inside of the necks lubed.

That works for me! I need to get some dies headed my way and a mess of brass, dang the ecconomy I should have done this last year when I was working those 70 hour weeks! Anyway thinks for your help. Later,

I've got a set of the Redding 338/300 Dies, keep an eye on the classifieds or Shawn sells em too. You'll like this caliber.

I'll have to send Shawn a PM when my little check hits the bank, as for price would it be just as easy to use the 338RUM dies or step up and get the 338/300 dies? your opinion? Later,

Kirk
