.338 barrels

I will be building a .338 Norma Mag soon. Any particular favorite barrel makers for .338?

There are a lot of top tier barrel companies, I'd say there's no less than ten that I would have no problem using one of their barrels. It mostly comes down to personal preference. Hart and Krieger are my "goto" barrels but there are many others that are top notch as well.

Anyone ever see a Savage 112 in 338 Lapua shoot ? They shoot unbelievably well for a factory barrel. Compared to ANY barrel maker making custom barrels, they are tent stakes by comparison. Chose one, work up some loads that it likes and you'll have one accurate rifle.

I have Krieger, Shilen, Bartlein, and McGowan. They are all very accurate and I can't tell the difference. My 338 Edge wearing a Remage McGowan is probably the most accurate rifle I own.

I've seen 2 .338 Win Mags that both shot like a house of fire. One had a Benchmark, the other had a Shilen.

I have 2 Brux, but that was because the delivery time was less than 1/2 what Kreiger was promising at the time, but mostly because Brux offered "interupted fluting" as an option.

They both shoot awesome, and I would think that any of the top mfgrs put out good tubes in 338 these days.

The Benchmark barrels that I have in .338 have done well. - But as stated I think any of the good makers out there today will provide a fine barrel. - I soot a lot of different barrels from different makers & Krieger & Broughton are 2 of my favorites.

My 338 RUM is going to get a 28" benchmark 1-9.5" twist 5R varmint contour. Ordered it Wednesday from 3rd generation and got it Friday. sure seems like a nice barrel, hopefully it shoots as good as the other posters experienced.

Lot of great barrel makers these days. My 338-375R wears a Brux 1 in 10" and shoots very well. Fast barrel too.

Buddy of mine is set up as a dealer with Rock Creek. Planning on trying a Rock Creek cut rifled barrel when my Brux wears out. Maybe twist it a little tighter to 9.3" if they can do it.

Remember when ordering a Rock Creek barrel that they all have a slight gain twist so if you order a 9.3 twist it will be faster than that...like 8.8-9” towards the end of the barrel.

Good to know. Thank you for that info. Might stay with 1 in 10" then.
