30cal derivatives of the 22/250

Guys,
I'm new here ... go easy on me! ;D

I've got a bee in my bonnett to rechamber a spare 30cal 1:14.5" twist barrel to a wildcat based on either the 22/250 or better yet the 22/250AI. Does such a cartridge exist? It'll be more for varmint use than anything else with projectiles from 110gr to 125gr exclusively.
Cheers...

Try the .300 Savage or, for more efficiency, the .30 IHMSA.

Here's a look at its sibling, the 7mm IHMSA:

If you're dead set on a wildcat and cost is no object by all means do what you would like.

The 300 Savage may be close enough to what you want--have you looked at any of that load data?

Just a thought.

I have a Savage 99 in 300 Savage and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the 300 Savage was the parent case for the 250-3000 Savage which is the parrent cartridge for the 22/250. A great cartridge for target shooting is the 6mm/22/250. I think you could make 300 Savage brass by running 308 Lapua brass through a 300 Savage body die then trimming the necks. You can get 300 Savage brass but I believe that the 308 cases are designed for higher pressures than the Savage brass and the Lapua would probably be more uniform in any event. And if you are thinking wildcat anyway, you could leave the necks long after sizing the 308 cases since the short neck has been the big criticism of the Savage case compared to the 308. You would basically be pushing the neck shoulder junction back leaving the case body length the same while increasing the shoulder angle. Might be a very intersting case. I always though my 99 was very accurate for a lever gun with iron sights.

You could also make .300 Savage cases out of 6.5x47 lapua or 6.5 Creedmoor brass.
There's no question both cases are very strong.

I have what is called a 30X47 HBR ( hunter bench rest) wildcat. It is the 300 Savage case with the shoulder shortened 10 thousands inch but the case is left the same OAL giving a longer neck. It is very accurate. IMR 4895 seems to be THE powder. With 125 gr bullets I get 2850 fps in my 10" twist barrel. You could probably get a little faster velocity with your 14.5" twist. The 125 Speer TNT is very accurate and it really comes unglued. I shoot deer with the 125 Nosler ballistic tip and it is perfect for deer. I bet a 110 Hornady V-max would step right along and make a mess of a varmint.

Con - If you are determined to go the wildcat route you have a lot of similar cartridges to choose from. I would not try to invent a new one since every combination has been tried, at least once. You might call Dave Kiff or one of the other reamer makers to see what reamers he may have in stock.

2506 - The 30x47 HBR that I'm familiar with is nothing but a shortened 308W. It has the same 20 degree shoulder angle. At one time it was a favorite of HBR shooters but you seldom see one being used today.

Tony R - The 250 Savage preceeded the 300 Savage by about 5 years. The two cases share the same rim and base diameter but that is about all.

Ray,
That makes sense except I'm not interested in sourcing custom reamers and then dies for what will be a varmint rifle.

More I think about it ... the more I like the idea of a 30cal on the 22/250 in the sense that 22/250 or 22/250AI reamers and 30cal neck/throaters are held by many gunsmiths (and my gunsmith will modify existing 22/250 dies to match the 30cal chamber), quality brass is available from Lapua, case capacity isnt as great as a 308Win but its more than a 7.62x39 or 30/30 (I considered a 30/30Win with rims turned to 0.473" ;D ), magazine feed should be a breeze, and lightweight (105-120gr) quality projectiles are available thanks to the 30BR.

Only question is whether there's enough case capacity to drive the 110gr projectiles quick enough to give a reasonable varminting trajectory.

I've got a few wildcats and as always ... the education from each is a joy in itself.
Cheers...

30 TC, 30x47L, 300 Creedmoore, 30 IHMSA, 30x44, 300 Sav. are all pretty close to each other. Brass and small performance differences are about the only difference

Con, i have seen a number of such wildcats used in IHMSA etc. however, i have a question,
if you intend to use it for varmint - the 110's BC in 30cal are not very helpful for use beyond 200-300 yds, i think you will limit yourself as to the rifles usefulness.

Bob,
That's the crux of my concern as well and why I stated 'reasonable' trajectory rather than 'excellent' trajectory. ;) Mind you ... 300yds covers 95% of any varminting I get to do. I just figure if a 30BR is useful, a 30 on the 22/250 should also be of some merit. If the fatter pills assisted in 'spreading' the varmint across the paddock then there's enough merit there. ;)

The flip side will be the rifle will be used on occasion to drive 150gr cast pills for plinking duties.
Cheers...

Con, good response, suggestion,

Consider the 6x250 or even the 7x250 both of which will be the same chamber but have significantly hight BC pills giving more range on varmit and very good deer. both have a history that you can review

Alf, the cost of chambering, fitting with a result of less than wanted is not a good idea vs sellint the bbl, and getting one that suits

My 30X47 HBR is an old hunter class bench rifle. Yes cases can be made out of 308 Win but you have to turn the necks. With 300 Savage you don't have to turn necks for my rifle.

Bob,

Duly noted,

Except Con's in OZ, not quite as convenient to run down to the local barrel store.....

Con, if this will be a hunting rig, and assuming a good bolt-actioned rifle, just go with a .300 Savage - get a 'good' reamer (properly dimensioned for your barss - or, better yet, to a set of readily available dies - like the Rdding Type "S" FL/Nk bushing sort), from Dave Kiff, or, equivalent, "throated for your preferred bullet, score some .300 Sav. brass, and don't look back . . . with 125 Gr. bullets, and using H-322 (you'll probably know the ADI #), you will easily attain 3K+ FPS, and remarkable precision, with no hassle! ;) If you prefer to turn necks, spec the reamer to just clean-up the neck walls - if you want no-turn, mic. some loaded necks, and spec. a [chamber] neck diameter 0.003" -0.004" larger. If I didn't already have several iterations of "30x47s", and I could begin with a clean slate, this is what I'd do for my Hunter Class competition rigs . . . clean and simple. The .300 Sav, was WAY ahead of its time! :o :D Good shootin'! RG

does this barrel have some sentimental value or is it a super match barrel??? or is this a wanta see what i can come up with project......
i also have 99 lever in the 300 savage open sights and it is a really good medium range deer gun for the up and comers....and will do 1" groups at 100 .... it has done in rock chucks, coyotes and deer... for a multipurpose gun in a bolt it would be great....all componets are readily avalable....

a 30-250 sounds intrieging.... i really like 22-250 for varmiting and deer hunting but the heavier bullits carry in the wind so much better.... i think you should look serious at that and build so i know if i want to ;D
