30cal and 7mm choices with .473bf

I'm looking ahead for deer season and wanting to chamber a barrel to hunt with. I've deer hunted with a 308 for 25+ years and would like something a little different. I'm stumped for ideas for a short action, 308 boltface chambering in 30cal or 7mm that'll out perform a 308 ballistically. I'm kinda leaning towards 284win. Any other ideas?

Nothing wrong with the 308.... I guess I'm just wanting something different, something faster and flatter but still limited to a short action and 308 boltface. Ideally Id want a 300wsm with a 308 boltface.

Nah... I don't drink that creedmoor tea. I had somewhat considered just going 6.5/284 but really do like those 30s for blood trails. I may have talked myself into just screwing a wsm together with another action.

284 in a short action using 160 class bullets. OAL of 2.9 which works in a hinged floor plate or AICS mag. I'm getting 3000fps with mine in a 25" barrel with 162s and RL17. Using H4350 would easily make the mid 2900s. Great deer rifle for sure outperforming the 308 very handily.

30-284 winchester is what you want i think. Closer to 30-06 levels with a rebated rim to fit that bolt face and possibly still short action enough to fit

My vote would be for a 7-08AI or 260AI. The 30 isn't going to get you any better blood trails, statistically speaking. That is wholly dependent on bullet construction, not bullet diameter. Both of those cartridges have great bullet selections available and will produce velocities that rival their longer relatives. Both have readily available brass and are easy to load for, and will work without sacrificing powder space in a SA magazine (unlike the 284 variants).

All that being said, if you are looking for something that really trumps the 308 from a ballistics standpoint then the 6mm Creedmoor is where you should be looking.

Are you using a normal 284 chamber? I am looking at a prefit barrel in 7-08, 7-08 match, 284, or 284 match in a short action. I'd use a short action extended mag to get to a max of 2.98" and was wondering if there was a COAL different in the standard or match chambers? Or is the main difference neck diamter or tolerances?

The 6.5 Creed with, 130 gr. ELD-M's - Berg. OTM's @ 2,850 fps or, 135 gr Classic Hunters, IS Extremely Accurate and very Deadly on, Deer / Antelope out to, 500- 600 Yards with,.. much LESS,.. Recoil.
Get OVER the name, "Creedmoor", It's Just, a GOOD,. Cartridge for, People that, UNDERSTAND, "Ballistic's" !
TWO of, the Biggest, Bull Elk, Killed recently, in Idaho were Shot with, 143 gr. ELD-X's, by 2 Ladies, using 6.5 Creed's @ 350 to 400 yards and,. BOTH,. were,.. DRT !
The 6.5 Creedmoor IS, Popular for,.. SEVERAL Reasons

Keep it simple. Since it must be a short action, go with a 284 Winchester.

True, the 7-08 is a great round, but the 284 will do anything a 7-08 will do, but the opposite is not true.

Make the barrel a 1-9 twist and the 284 will handle anything from 140 grain bullets all the way to 180’s.

I believe it's a standard 284 chamber yes AND I can also get 2.990 OAL but I keep it around 2.975-980 max for no issues loading from the DBM while in the woods. My neck is a No Turn neck @.317. Hunting rifle so wanted reliability.
