30br

Have a "need" for a 30br for a pliking,fun gun.
would like to use 125tnt's,125nosler bt's. What kind of velocity can I expect and what twist should I order barrel in.
Thanks Wayne,

Hmmmm....interesting.

That's a highly specialised cartridge for a "fun plinking gun" but if that's what you really want, it's your call. I guess you are aware of the requirements for making your own cases, neck turning etc.

You should get between 2900 and 3000 fps out of 125grn bullets. 1:17 twist will be sufficient for stabilising those bullets and is the traditional choice if chasing premium accuracy with custom bullets in that weight range.

However, it depends once again what you mean by "fun plinking". You might want to consider a faster twist rate to give you more options for heavier bullets. The lighter ones won't see a lot of difference in accuracy in the plinking scenario. Certainly the 125 Nosler BT's will handle just about as much spin as you want to put on them without breaking up.

As a total odd-ball project, you could even put a super fast twist 30 cal barrel like a 1:8 twist and shoot really heavy bullets at subsonic velocities. I'd consider a 240grn Sierra Matchking at 1050fps to be fun for plinking too!!!!

I am currently using the 125gr tnts in my 30br. They shoot extremely well. I am using H4198 starting at 32.9grs with .010 Jam. If you are looking for something that will shoot and bullets that aren't as expensive as the top custom bullets these will work for sure......

Has anyone actually developed subsonic loads for the 30BR?

I have been working with subsonics in 4 different cases and two different calibers for a number of years. One of the cases I have worked with extensively is similar to the 30BR so I am sure my data would be easily adapted to the 30BR case.

Approximately 2 yars ago I decided to build a rifle for subsonic culling, heavier bullets) and longer distance shooting of inter alia jackall with lighter bullets,I`m a game farmer in Namibia)and incidentally decided on the 30 BR in an old Palma 1:14 barrel. I later learned of the BR qualities of the calibre and ordered a 26" heavy 1:17 Border barrel. I still have not build the rifle as I am no longer convinced that the 1:17 barrel will stabilise a heavy enough bullet for subsonic shooting and if a heavy rifle, approx 6.5kg) will be what I really want. On the other hand I don`t want to spend good money on an old barrel and possibly don`t get max accuracy. I must mention that barrels are licenced in Namibia and it is quite a process to get your hands on a barrel.
What will be the best option for a subsonic rifle which can also shoot a 110-118gr bullet at 3000f/s
Chris

A subsonic capable rifle will require a 1:10 or faster twist rate. The .308 Win is about the only catridge that is going to be able to break 3000 fps as well as operate subsonics.

I have done a lot of subsonic work with the 7.62x39, which is a good medium sized case. I think the .30BR would be similar to but a lot better than the Russian.
