30BR Wins at 500m,550 yards)

Yep i have done it on my first go in major Comp i managed a win.
This is only the second time i have shot my 30BR at 500m as our home range is only 350m long.
Anyway the Peter Short Memorial Queensland State Titles 500m FLY Townsville. I managed to take out the smallest group over all 1.750" Highest score on a single Target 58.1 and highest agg for 5 targets Light Gun 231.3.
All with my 13.3lb 30BR 115gr CDC 8 Ogive flat based projectiles & 24" PAC-NOR 5 groove Barrel 17 twist. The two Rifles that beat me were heavy guns weighing in at over 50lbs will post a pic of my best two targets.and trophies.

Great shooting, Bob. Hope it's not "beginner's luck". Very pleased to see the 30BR exceling at things other than "point-blank benchrest". What a wonderful cartridge.

The rifle and projectiles were quite capable of doing the job even with the low approx .360BC it was just driving the thing at longer ranges i had to contend with as the smallest error is multiplied by 5 so if you are out by .1 at 100 its .5 by 500.
The conditions were pretty ordinary, between showers of rain the breeze would flick from over the left shoulder to 90 degs from the left or slightly back into your face.
One wind indicator half way down would be pointing left but the streamers would back up under it this would give you lift.
I tried to shoot on the left to right steady breeze.
I had just over an inch of windage on where the rest of them with the 168 and 175 grain projectiles only had a quarter to half.
My first two targets i experienced the same problem as last time i tried, Spot on on the sighter but when i wound across to the other target it would throw right and high. So after the second target i would shoot two sighters then move the whole rifle, rest and bag and reset on the working target this solved the problem. I was very tempted to stay and have a go at the 1,000 yards but i think if i had started getting anything like a group on a target i would have been lynched hahaha or there would have been a pile of heavy rifles thrown in a heap in the corner

Great Shooting, Congratulations!

Thanks for the help so far with getting my 30BR project up and going, not doing nearly as well as that though!

" I had just over an inch of windage on where the rest of them with the 168 and 175 grain projectiles only had a quarter to half. "

Aussie Bob, sorry my ignorance, but do you shot 2 types of projectiles on the same match, the 115gr. and the 168-175gr?
I am asking because I would like to know if it is possible to use a 30BR with a 1-17 or 1-18 twist barrel to shoot the heavier bullets like the 168gr. and 175gr... as well the lighter bullets.
Thank you for your attention and congratulations!

No the mention of the 168gr & 175gr projectiles was refering to the other shooters who where useing 300 wincester mags and 30x284 etc. Also there were 6br`s and 6.5 x 284 I hope to get to the FLY shoot in Brisbane in November.

Aussie Bob I might see you at the Brisbane Fly. Trying to organise myself to shoot that one. I will be at Canberra in september for the Pro Cal, I generally shoot all the matches except Brisbane and Townsville due to distance but as I said am trying to sort out a Brisbane shoot this year and maybe Townsville next year.
I would be real interested to see you shoot that BR in Canberra, and its a real good shoot too.

Rinso,
Like you i cannot get away for long so travelling to Canberra is a bit much tho i am going to Sydney in October for a RBA shoot.
But i am a fulltime carer for my old Mum,81)Dad passed away last year and i have to plan well in advance to have someone to look after her while i am away and with fuel running at $1.30 and better per litre it gets expensive have been trying to get the mate into shooting so we can share expenses i am 600 miles or 1,000klms north of Brisbane so a fair drive at least its cheap to stay at the SSAA at Belmont.

Well Bob I hope you get to travel south at some point, lots of very good shoots and some real nice folks involved you would have a great time.
I am just happy you got to the Fly and did well, I seem to recall saying sometime back that the best way to find out how the 30BR would go at 500 was to go and try it. I am sure you are pleased that you did and as they say winners are grinners and I bet you had a big smile on your face at Townsville.
Mind you I am sticking with my 300WM.
Whens this RBA shoot I might sneak in to that ???

Cheers
Dave

Mate the RBA shoot is on at the SISC 14th & 15th of October.
All info is on this site.

Congratulations, Bob! It appears that you did a fine job of tuning and doping . . . and accepting that precision is precision, and wind-drift is just wind-drift! ;) Great shootin'!:thumb: R.G.
