30BR vs. 30 REM AR cartridges

I would like to use one of these in the new IBS AR class. Does anyone have the internal & external specs for these two cartridges? I am curious to know how close they are as far as case capacity, external deminsions and ballastics. Also, has anyone reloaded the 30 REM AR or both? What are your thoughts of using the 30 BR in an AR platform?

Dont forget a .30 PPC as an option as well... I have been shooing the .30 Walker (my .30PPC variant) for some time, and it shoots really well. Its Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass necked up to .30, and pushes a 112 BIB at 2950-3000 fps.

Advantage to this over the .30 BR is that all the parts are already out there for a PPC boltface AR (the 6.5 Grendel).

Mark, that's one i never considered. I do have a 7.62x39 barrel & bolt hiding in the corner....What make are your dies? What twist is your barrel and length barrel? Did you do any modifications to your brass besides necking it up? Who chambered your barrel and do they have the reamer?

I was trying to go with a factory based ammo like the 30 REM AR using a 1:16 twist barrel. Or build a 30BR in a AR and do the reloading. There's a company in VA that builds 6mmBR's for the AR-15 which are magazine fed

The bolt face is .495 on the 30 AR so it's an odd size, nothing a little lathe time won't fix tho.

Deadwood, I don't have the setup in an AR presently, but have been seriously considering it since the IBS announcement.

My barrel is on a Panda BR rifle presently. It is 17 twist Krieger, 23" IIRC. Of course, your 7.62x39 bolt is the same face as the PPC. It is my reamer, came from Kiff, you can order sizing die from Harrells, I think. Speedy made my sizer custom before he started teaching, and Jack Leather is who customized my seating die (a Redding comp that started life as a 6.5 Grendel)

Mark, how does that 30 Walker perform @ 100 & 200 yds.

Better than me... ;D Last time I shot it, it was a 300 at an F-Class target and I shot 24 shots in a row into either the 10 or X ring. This was my first time to fire the rifle prone, its a BR bench gun, and was a terrible fit like that. Not to mention, I'm not all that great of a shot...

Mike Ezell is familar with making the dies. Has his reamer and mine right this second.

I got mine out for the first time this weekend. It's a bolt gun for IBS VFS.

Guys, are there any cons to go along with all the pros I have been reading about the 30PPC? Does anyone know of a company that makes a magazine for the AR that feeds the 30PPC reliably?

I can only speak of the 30 Major. Some feed better than others. What type of shooting are you considering. It can be made reliable in different mags with differeing amounts of work. None of which are hard but may or may not be necessary in your case.

I just noticed....for IBS BR, a std 10 rd mag will be reliable...not so much for the hi caps without a little work.---Mike

30 PPC has a longer neck than 30 Major/Walker/GR/RCH/et al which are to the PPC case as a Dasher/BRX/etc is to the base 6BR.

The brass prep for making the 30 Major/yadda from 6.5 Grendel brass is a tad easier than making 30BR brass from 6BR.

Making the 30 PPC from 220 Russian is, if you'll pardon the pun, more of a stretch.

When the Sako 6PPC brass comes out, it'll get easier. Probably.

That's him two posts above. "gunsandgunsmithing"

If that doesn't work, do a switchboard.com people search for "Mike Ezell" in Auburn, KY. He's "Mike W Ezell".

Can you actually get the same velocity out of the AR as you can with say a Viper or Panda ? Or should I say the same velocity AND reasonable case life ?

No, Ray. The AR15 just won't stand the same kind of pressures that a custom bolt action can, but you can make them shoot at slightly reduced loads. Brass life can be very good if you don't beat it up too much with extraction/ejection....then stepping all over them ;D. I'd use a no turn or min. turn neck to save the necks somewhat in a gas gun and tune the ejector so as to be easier on my brass. I have both, a no turn and a .330 neck 30 Major reamer---Mike

It's being called the AR class but would any military autoloader be legal ? I have thought about rebbling a Yugo SKS I have, say 220 or 6mm Beggs. Solid steel receiver, delete the gas system so no adverse bbl torque, work on the trigger, much lighter recoil spring so it's easy to manually work the bolt carrier, custom scope mount that screws to the side of the rec, Metal Mayhem stock design.

Has to be AR-based.

Complete rules here on http://accurateshooter.com/bulletin.html . Just do a ctrl-F and search for "IBS Approves"

There is a thread on Benchrest.com that discusses the rules in more detail and might have updates as they're settled on. I didn't see anything on the IBS web site.
