30BR neck turning?

I guess this would concern all neck turning but when forming 30 BR do you turn just when forming the brass or do you turn after firing?

If after firing do you size with a Bushing die or use something else?

Also do you turn before or after necking up?

Thanks

Most 30 br chambers have a neck diameter of .330, so this means you will have to turn the necks before you fire them in your chamber.

Go to the link and see how a pro does this.

To answer your question about sizing with a bushing die then turning, a bushing die does not size all the way down to the neck/shoulder junction. You need to size with a standard F/L sizer to expand the neck correctly for turning necks.

Do any of you turn them again after several firings ? Or is the initial turn to get to the proper thickness enough?

The key to concentric 30 BR brass is expanding them up in several steps as not to push the should to one side or the other as the expansion process proceeds.

Using Elliptical neck expanders that have very little bearing surface ( less stress on the necks and brass), I step up to 25, 6.5 ,7mm and then 30 and then 30 cal expanding mandrel that matches my neck turner. The shoulder does and will move when sizing up the brass should be close to concentric when done correctly and ready to begin the neck turning process.

Neck turning can be done correctly before firing and should not need a final turning later if turned properly after the neck expansion process.

My .02¢.

Whose neck expanders do you recommend ? i was going to use the pma 6 to 30 expander . Do you use a cardbide expander?

DJS Brass Service is right ! I add one more 270 I go up from 6 to 30 in every caliber, turn in 3 passes ! They key is a carbide turning mandrel with a expander that matches ! If brass fits your Turner mandrel loosely its trouble. carbide Turning mandrel to keep heat in check ! Lube Lube Lube ! I don't think you can use to much ! Expander mandrel's in Lock & Load quick change holders !

I use Hornady Elliptical neck sizing dies. However, I do not size the neck with the die itself therefore I move the expander mandrel elliptical ball down to expand the neck without pushing the brass into the neck of the die. No need in overworking the brass necks when not necessary.
