30br for groundhogs

Ive asked about this before, but, maybe more have tried it by now.

How are the results compared to a say a 22-250 or 243? A 125 TNT at 3000fps should do some impressing things to a varmint.

I have a complete 30BR set-up for a Savage action in the for sale section. BBl, turned brass, dies, 110 Berger bullets, go gauge.

It should really do the biz on varmints.

Northman, so long as you keep your shots in the reasonable ranges, the 30 BR should be an awesome varmint round. There are cartridges that will reach out farther, but accuracy inside say 400 yards will be great. The TNT is a good shooter, and CHEAP for sure compared to the customs, but won't quite hang with them in the accuracy department. If you are considering building a rifle on the 30BR, I say go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I have 2 30 br's I use in score shooting and have killed a ground hog or two with them. The case is very accurate with many powders and keeps in tune. But having said that I normally use a Modified 6br {6BRG} on varmints. Flatter shooting, better bullet selection, and less recoil. I also use the 6BRG with a fast twist for long range shooting. The 6BRG or 6 BR would be a better choice for an accurate varmint round I believe.

I am using a .30 cal for varminting and using the 125grn Ballistic Tips, however, I am using the 300 WSM Cartridge. The rifle is being built by Richard Franklin and is called the 300 Varminter.

The 300 Varminter is designed to shoot the 110grn V-Max and the 125grn BT at 4000+fps. In order to get this type of performance, The 300 Varminter is based on 300 WSM Tight neck Match Chamber, Norma 300 WSM Brass, Nesika Model K Action and Bartlien 30" 1-15 Twist Barrel.

The rifle shoots very very flat and is deadly accurate with 125grn BT out to 800 yards. The "Red Mist factor" is like nothing you have ever seen. Please, visit Richard Custom Rifles to learn more about this chambering.

I shoot the 125 g TNT with out of my 308 with light to moderate loads. 3 to .75 MOA with every powder and virtually every load I've tried. Cheap, accurate and low recoil, whats not to love?

Explosive on groundhogs at 3000 fps.

I have a 30X47,300 Savage with case shoulder shortened ten thousands). This rifle is dog nuts accurate. If you get to know your rifle in 30 br. and learn where to dial your scope you should not have any problem using it on groundhogs out to around 400 or 500 yards. I use the 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips and 150 Sierra game kings to take deer with my 30X47. All have been inside 300 yards for the simple reason that no deer that I wanted to shoot has showed up beyond 300 yards. All have been one shot kills and I like the 125 Noslers best. I have not used the 125 TNT's but a friend was shooting some in a 308 at empty pop cans at 200 yards and that bullet was coming apart and taking out around 1 1/2 inch holes on exit. Now that is expansion. They should blow up a groundhog.

Varminthunter,

Just came across this post and am glad to hear of your satisfaction with the 300WSM by Richard Franklin. I ordered one back in January and can't wait to get my hands on it. I have 300 pieces of Norma brass preped and ready to go. I decided to have one of these built after visiting Richard's website and then ordering some of his DVDs. He has some very informational tips and techniques to offer. My reloading improved greatly after watching the DVD several times. Also being close in age to Richard I really enjoyed the section on his site,'Stories of my Life'. Some of it is down-right hilarious: especially him and his horse Jack!! :)

Good shoot'n to ya. If you have any info to pass on about the 300WSM I would love to hear from you.

Take care.

What do you consider reasonable range??

I know a bloke over here who uses his 30BR Bench gun to shoot out to 700+ yards

Seeing the 30 Br can be loaded upto not far behind a 308- what is your estimation of Reasonable range?

I am working on loads for my 30 BR now with everything from a 110 V-max through to 185 Lapua HPBT Scenars

Just because one uses it at long range doesn't make it the best choice. I don't find the 308 Winchester the to be the ideal long range chambering either, and the 30BR can't hang with it. The 30BR is a short range cartridge, 300 yards and less, IMO. Anything beyond that, there are far better cartridges when wind drift and drop are taken into account. That's not to say that you can't shoot it at 600yd matches, just be prepared to lose when the wind blows a little. Keep in mind that my experiences and opinions are based on shooting competitive Benchrest. I'm not bashing the 30 BR at all. I feel that it is one of the most accurate cartridges ever devised, if not THE most accurate. But that's with very slow twist barrels and light bullets, at short range. Heck, the first screamer I ever shot in competition was with a 30BR at 300yds. It measured just over a quarter inch...

my 30 BR is built with a full bore barrel- faster twsit than the usual 1:17's or similar

mines somewhere 1:13

in the limited load work I have been able to do so far- everything from 110 to 185 Lapuas are all tip onto target and reasonable accuracy

I did get to play with some 155 F-class projectiles and they best grouped into .441

As yes I haven't been able to get to the range properly and give it a good run

but those 155's were hitting the 8 inch gong at 400 yards no problem in horrible wind conditions
the conditions were so bad thet I had given up group shooting for the day and was just fireforming
Mate on the bench next door deared me to have a go at the 400Y gong- with my pipsquake round
wiped the smile from his face

I held up and had a go at the 500 plate for the last 3 rounds- all 3 just below the plate- splashed it with dirt they were all that close

next time out I'm going to have a propper go at 500m fly target

The LG winner on the link is the bloke who has used hios 30 Br to 700 yards in comps
