30BR for Deer and 300 -600 yard varmints

I am toying with the idea a commissoning a rifle in 30BR as a varmint rifle that will also be used as a carry rifle for deer shooting. I am comparing it to .260 Rem and 7mm-08 and it seems to stack up well ballistically. Is anyone doing this yet?, any thoughts, advice etc. I have a custom 6mmPPC so I am conversant with neck turning etc. The single shot element is not a worry either, I shot 3 foxes in under 60 seconds with the PPC last summer.

Thanks in advance.

Geoff, you should contact Mickey Coleman,on the Top Gunsmiths list). He has built a number of 6BR deer rifles, and he can give you his take on that option. When it comes to 30BR, yes the performance of the cartridge is pretty amazing, but the 112-125 grain match bullets used in competition aren't ideal for game-killing. Also the bullets are short and fat, with relatively low BCs, so you'd want to keep your shots inside 400m. But at 300m there is no question than a 30BR can be supremely accurate, and the chambering has exceptional barrel life. Nosler makes a .30-cal 125gr Spitzer Ballistic tip with a claimed .366 BC that looks like a good match for the job. Sierra offers a 125gr flat-based, soft-point Pro-Hunter which would also be a good choice. It has a .279 BC above 2800 fps,not that bad), which you should be able to reach, even with a relatively short barrel.

It could be a very successful project. I say go for it and let us know how it works. We'd try the Noslers, product #30125) first.,See below)
