30BR Barrel ?s

I've about decided to have my Rem. 700/308 built into a 30BR, but have a few questions about the barrel. I plan to use the 30BR for varmint, informal target, and just fun paper punching out to 500 yards, the range length I have available to me).

I'm leaning toward 17 twist, but wonder if 15 would be more useful for a "multi-purpose" rifle?

What is the preferred or "optimum" 30BR barrel length? I've always been partial to long barrels, long to me being 24" or more), is there any accuracy/ballistics reason to go more than 24" or maybe 26"? Or shorter than 24"?

I'm figuring for what I want I would want a no-turn neck, would there be any reason to consider otherwise?

Are there any specifics I should be considering about throat/freebore kinds of things?

Any just general advise or pointers anyone would care to give about barrel selection?

Thanks
Dan

The 17 would be the best for 125 gr. on down. For what you want to do.

The 24 inch would be max. You will not get much Vel. over 24 and will not lose much with less. It shoot about the same regardless of barrel length.

No turn is fine but you will still have to turn the donut off. You might be able to get by this by shooting a 6mm bullet in the 30 BR chamber. Make sure you are tight into the lands.

I would get a gunsmith that has a Robbinett reamer.

I have 4 barrel chamber for 30 BR. Three are 17, but have one that is a 12 twist, old 308 barrel re-chambered. The length is form 19 1/2 to 24.
