.308 with 16" Barrel

I am hunting in a lot of thick woods and want to stick with the .308 since this is what I reload. I just ordered a Chassis for my Remington 700 .300WSM and thinking of using the same chassis in the woods with the .308.

Should I just purchase a Remington 700 .308 and have the barrel cut down to 16" or is it worthy of having an action and barrel made to suit this? I realize the 16" barrel will not be accurate, most of the shots will be less than 100yrds.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Remington makes a 16" heavy barreled "Tactical model" or two.

I have a Ruger Gunsite Scout I use for deer hunting for all the same reasons you mention, and it consistently shoots MOA off a bipod with inexpensive Federal ammo at 100 yards. Accuracy on the Remingtons seems pretty darn good too.

The Ruger is also is pretty light and handy.

Mostly what you lose is 200 fps or so at 100 yards.

My 16.5" barrel is just as accurate as my 24" barrel. I loose 180 FPS between the barrels with IMR 4064. I run my 16.5" for when I am running around the ranch and chasing random unwanted critters. The 16.5" is nice with the supressor on it, kinda damn noisy without. I want to try some faster burning powders and lowering charges to reduce the flash. Subsonics are awesome out of it.
