.308 Winchester?

G'day fella's,

I have just recently returned to the shooting scene and have just acquired a Remington 700P in 6mm 284.

Personally I think it is a very capable caliber and it shoots very flat, however at 500 meters and when the mirage and wind kick in the best optics in the world can't help you and the 105 grn Lapua's are not really that wind resistant.

I now intend to have the rifle re-barreled, perhaps with a Kreiger barrel in .308,the only problem will be finding a supplier here in Australia).

What are your opinions on the .308 as a long range caliber and Kreiger barrels in terms of quality?

Krieger barrels are as good as they get. Good company that stands behind their product.

Your 6-284 will shoot "inside" just about any .308 Win configuration you can come up with. Now if you're talking about building a 300 WSM,or 30-338) that's a different story.

Stated BC of a 105gr Scenar is 0.530. I use 0.525 and come-ups calculated with than number are within one click of what I observe at the range.

Here are BCs of some popular .308 caliber bullets.

Lapua 155: 0.508
168 MatchKing: 0.462
175 MatchKing: 0.505

You really have to get up into the 210gr range for a really high-BC .308 bullet,Sierra 210 MK 0.645). You may want to look at the 180gr 7mms in stead. The Berger 180gr bullet has a listed BC of 0.684. A .284 Improved with a Berger 180 at 2950 fps will shoot inside a 300 WM with most bullets. Forum member Jim Hardy set a 1000-yard record with a .284 Improved and 180s.

What kind of shooting are you going to do? If it's prone style, It seems like most of the rules down under require a .308. I would check with the local clubs and find out what most of the guy's are doing and why. Component availability may be a driving force.

Welcome back to the game.
Mike

I am using the 6mm 284 in 500 meter bench rest, down under we call it fly shooting, rather then have an X as center of the target we have a blow fly.

I really do like the 6mm 284, I just don't like the life expectancy.

I also contemplated 6.5 X 284. Decisions, decisions.

Probably the main reason that I want to re-barrel the Remington is that with the mirage I just can't see the bullet holes.

I was informed that with 7mm 08 decent projectiles are not easily sourced.

A few of the shooters have suggested that I build up a 30-06, however I have read that the .308 is a far superior caliber out to a 1000 yards.

Let me suggest .260 Rem or .260 AI.

I shoot a .260 Rem with 123gr SMKs for across the course and mid-range, and use the 142's for Long Range, it's a great cartrdige. Recoil is non-existant compared to a .308.

Here is an article on the .260 AI
http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek046.html

As far as .30-06 vs. 308 if they both shoot the same bullet at the same velocity they perform the same. Reason .30-06 doesn't have much pub in Long Ragne is becasue nobody loads it with a descent bullet for 1000yd work. Take a .30-06 with a 175gr SMK and you'll shoot right with or actually can shoot a load heavier than .308 provided you have the correct powder. .308 tends to be more accurate becasue of a shorter powder column.

However why bother just rebarrel your 700P in a .260 or .260 AI and be done with it.

And even then there are better options than a .30 cal magnum. A straight .284 Winchester or a .280 Remington with 175 SMKs or 180 Bergers will outshoot a 300WM with 210gr SMKs, and a 6.5x284 for that matter. According to the BC number Bryan Litz has gotten through test results.

Truly, one of the great myths of the shooting world. My money is on some hack writer in a gun magazine came up with such an assertion, and it has been repeated so often that it has become gospel. Unfortunately, there are enough people still shooting tiny groups with the 30-06 that it kind of debunks the short powder column theory. Not to mention that in machine rests, the "advantage" for the 308 seems to evaporate. It has to be something else, like say, recoil.

G'day fellas,

Thanx for your wisdom.

I recently took the old shooter out to the range and developed a load for her using 45.5 grns Vihta Vouri N 150 and a 155 grn Palma match projectiles, which listed in volume 3 of their load manual is 1.1 grns under maximum load.

I also obtained and mounted an old Lyman 'All American' 25 x LRBR rifle scope that had been boosted by Wally Seibert to I think 42 x, the scope also has the 'spider-web' cross hair.

The scope is so clear that you can almost see the craters on the moon.

Perhaps their powder is more sensitive in our warmer climate down under because over ten shots I obtained muzzle velocities between 2796-2808 fps.

I also managed an inch group at 200.

Needless to say I was pretty impressed with the Old mark X and the .308 Winchester in terms of accuracy and performance.

Regards

Sean.

I have a Savage 308 bull barrel new 1-12 twist from the factory, I use 155gr Berger VLD and used varget for a time then switch to N-133, closed up my groups a little and I shoot any were from 200yards to 1000 at steel.it will keep them in a 3 1/2 5 shot group all day long at 600yards if I do my part.I have witness groups at 800 yards 4 1/8 inchs. There are tighter grouping cal, around. I have seen a 6BR shoot 3 " groups at 800 yards, but" for a 308 off the shelf they shoot. The truely nice things about the 308 and the 6BR there isn't much recoil, fact even with the 308 I can see the bullet inpack the steel target from 300-1000 yards.
