308 Win with Barnes 130 TTSX

I was just wondering if anyone is using the Barnes 130 TTSX in their 308 with some great success. I just picked up a newish 308 rig with a Krieger barrel and HS stock. It is going to be mainly a hunting rig with some paper punching and I have a few hundred of the Barnes bullets. Thanks for any info.

Peter, I KNOW for a fact that .308 will shoot. The guy you got it from get's bored with everything real quick.

Glenn

Hey Glenn,

I know how Mark is with guns. I got the 308 from him in a trade. I might use it to shoot F T/R. I am going to shoot it this weekend and see what happens.

Peter

Peter, try some 175SMK that barrel is a 1-10. The 130 Barnes he got from me, he said they shot good. He shot at a deer @325 and could find no blood, useing the Barnes, I think I know what happened. For 600 use the 175 or some 2156 155 SMK I just got some of them. The reamer I used has a .050 fb so they will still go in the mag. Call me if you need anything.

Glenn

Thanks for the info Glenn. I will get my hands on some of the 175 SMK. I have a few 168 SMK and give them a try also. What powder would you recommend?

I shoot the 130 TTSX in my 300WM. Killed a few deer with it. Haven't shot one that went 2 steps yet. At 3500fps pretty much any big game will die before they hit the ground.

But hey if you don't want the 130 TTSX I will take them. ;D

Get you some 125 Nosler ballistic tips and you will not have any problem killing deer. You put one into a deers shoulder and they drop like the ground has been jerked from under them. Keep your muzzle velocity under 3100 fps if you think you will get shots under 100 yards.

I have been using the Barnes 130 TTSX since they were introduced. I have killed several deer with this bullet and find it to be the best bullet I have ever used. Last year I shot two doe at 415 yards and they both dropped in their tracks. Both shots had nice exit holes, and every thing in the huge wound channel was shredded.
I use a Savage 308 and my MV with this bullet is 3325 fps.

Peter, for the 175's & 125 classes I like Varget or AA2495 with FM 210M. For the 600yd paper the 168 may not be as good as the 175. For deer in a 308, SGK 165 HP,150NBT or the 125's the Barnes 130 even the Berger hunting 155vld. All good hunting bullets that will shoot in your gun will work. The 308 Win. is not hard to get to shoot and has the power and is verry accurate. Oh, he nows has a boat, someone will get a deal on it later on, when he gives up fishing.

Glenn

Glenn,
I saw his boat the other day when I picked up the gun and also his 4wheeler. I am gonna try and give that 308 a test run tomorrow. I put my Mk 4 8.5-25 on it yesterday and can't wait to shoot it.
Peter.

The TTSX bullet needs be driven at a fast speed in order for the bullet to mushroom on big game. 300 WSM is very capable of those high speeds.
Whereas the 308 velocities might be a little too slow for the longer distances.
The 308 calibre / whitetail deer would be best suited with an accubond style bullet.
This bullet will open up at all distances.

I loaded a factory 308 SAKO AII varmint rifle with 210gr. Wildcat rebate bullets using RL17 which produced extreme recoil, bullets had to be fed one-at-time because the factory magazine wouldnt accomodate the longer seating.
46.9 gr. = 2457 fps .250" group @ 100 yds.
47.2 gr. = 2494 fps .500" group @ 100 yds.

While I don't load 130's in 308, I do load them for 30-06 & 300WSM. I agree with previous posts, absolute hammer. Varget in the 06 & probably will work in the 308 as well. While I haven't shot a lot of deer with them yet, at least a dozen have fallen & only one went about 30yds. The rest were DRT.

I think Barnes will tell you that bullet is designed to open up reliable at anything over 1800 fps.

I don't completely agree with this. I didn't hotrod my 308 shooting the 130 and had three kills with it. Two deer and one coyote. The deer were 212 yds and 175 yds both DRT. The TTSX exited both with massive damage and exit wounds. The coyote was shot in the head at 80 yds and it obliterated it.
