308 Win. Spl.

I was hoping someone could help me out here. I just picked up a couple of bench guns, (real cheep) They are chambered for 308 win. spl. Is this a standard 308 or something else? I have not had the time yet to cast the chambers. They were built in the early 70's by Farris Pindell. One on a Al Weber action and the other on a sleeved 700. The work appears to be very nice. Possibly a tight neck or short throat (or both). A chamber cast will be your best bet.

A Weber action smithed by Ferris Pindell... doesnt get muuch better than that in my book.

Thanks for the reply. I also forgot to mention that they are 14 twist barrels. What weight bullet do you think they would run?

14 twist typically will run well with 155's and 168's. If it is hot enough, or high enough, or both, 175's might work... You would need more than 2600 fps to make it happen at sea level and 40 degrees F. Sg's aren't very good though. The longer 155's like Berger fullbores are only giving an sg of 1.05 @ 2800 fps. If the temperature is 80 degrees, the sg rises to 1.13. Shorter bullets are better (like Sierra 155's - the new palma bullet gives .13 more stability than the fullbore - The older 2155 bullet gives and sg of 1.51 @ 80 degrees)

Anything over 1 is going to fly, but the drag might be higher than expected and long range viability would be poor. For point-blank benchrest, some of the bullets commonly used for the 30BR would probably work well.

I would cast the chamber ,hard telling what it is if F, Pindell had it. Could be off the BR case or Savage or 308 Win.

In a 1:14" twist, assuming 300 yards or less, I'd look at the Berger 150 flat base (if they still make it).
