.308 Win loads

wboggs

Gold $$ Contributor
Just purchased a Savage F T/R in .308 and need some pet loads with 155 gr. bullets for 600-1000 yds.

In the half dozen or so 308s I've been associated with,48.0gr of 748 has been a solid performer. We tried that very load in a friends Tikka this fall with the 150 Hornady SP and shot pretty little 4 leaf clovers with it. I can't see why the 155 couldn't work as well with a propper reduction in charge weight and work up to the sweet spot.

Go for it. I suspect you'll have a pretty difficult time topping known good loads with Varget or N150, though. ;)

Here's a link to the .308 article recommended by memilanuk: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/308win/

It may well be the single best source of info re the .308 Win I've ever seen.

Regards, Guy

I only have one .308, not a traditionally accurate rifle but remakably accurate for what it is. A model 100 winchester. It shoots sub inch groups at 100 yards with bullet from 150-180 grains dith 46 grains of RL15. 168-180s are around a half with 44.7 grains RL15. You are getting warm at 46 with the 180s but with all others these should be safe in any rifle chambered for .308.

8208 XBR somewhere between 43.5 44.5 grs ( mine likes 43.7)Fed 210s 155 A-Maxs -.02 lands Fed GM brass

Unless your dead set on the 155gr bullets, I would suggest the 185gr Berger LR BTs with a CCI BR2 primer, and what every charge of Varget it takes you to push them 2750fps. (Note) What I mean by what ever charge is start low and work up slowly. Watching for pressure's. I wouldn't think you would have a problem getting them there out of a 30" barrel but always start low and work up with any powder charge. Varget is a good powder but as other's have posted it's not the only good powder out there. Varget is just what works for me. The 1in12 tw in your barrel will handle the 185s! It is a mutch better bullet as well the 175gr. Berger LR BTs are also better than the 155s. At least at 1000yds, and unless you plan on shooting them outside the USA....you can shoot them in FTR.

Re15 powder is my favorite for the 308. I currently load the 155 grainers with 45.4 of re15. It's not super quick, but is 1/2MOA out to 600 yards.

28" Broughton barrel 1/12" twist . . .

44.9grns of Varget behind a 155.5 Berger set on the lands, CCI primers, Lapua brass will destroy an X at 600yds for me!

START WITH A LOWER CHARGE, THEN BUILD UP JUST TO MAKE SURE!

I unfortunetly speak from experience! I blew up a bolt head "ONCE", it will never happen again!
