I am getting a 308 1-11 twist 26''.I havent ever had one so here is what I thinking 168 nosler HPBT, 175 Sierra, 155 lapua . As far as powder Varget, RL -15 . I plan to shoot 600-1000 yd {in-formal} I guess I'm just trying to get my feet wet. I plan to get redding comp dies so if somebody has some they might part with post reply and I will reply as soon as I can !

Thanks

The best single article I've seen on loading for the .308 is right here:

Great stuff. I've used the .308 quite a bit at 600 yards, and some beyond that. Mine have responded well to the 155's over near-max charges of Hodgdon's Varget. I've used mostly Nosler competition bullets, but also Sierras, Hornady and Bergers all in 155 grains.

The 168 Sierras are very accurate but I haven't found them the best at longer ranges. They do 600 yards just fine though.

175's are very good too. Some find them to be the "perfect" all around bullet for the .308 Win. I like Lapua brass, but Winchester will do with a little work. Federal is okay, but tends to be a little soft. Decisions seem to be split on primers: Federal 210 match, CCI BR's or even Mag Tech... All seem to work well for different people/different rifles.

I know every barrel will shoot different but it seems that with precision reloading many combinations work well with this cartridge. I was going to try to order bullets in bulk . I shoot varget in several others and preforms great . mabey start out with 155 or 168?

The winning Palma shooters are using varget. The 155 is manditory for this competition. With the 175 and the 190 sierra I have had exceptional luck with 4064. Have had 1/2 minute groups at 600 yds with 42.0 grs 4064 & 190 Sierra. Have won both the Army cup and the Air force cup 600 yard matches with this load.
Primer selection is critical at these ranges and the Russian primer has dominated the 1000 yd and F class wins the last 4 years.

Bob, congratulations on those outstanding wins. Now it is 13 years later, assuming you would still be shooting the .308 with 175 or 190s, would your loads be the same. Best, Larry

Don't over look Sierra's new 169 gr. matchking. I just started load development and at 600 yards it shoots a full 2 MOA higher than the 175 gr. It's really a flat shooting bullet.

Don't order bullets in bulk till you have tried a few and can get something that shoots reasonably good till you settle on what the gun really likes. The best bullet may be a quest for the life of the barrel so don't wait on that but you will see something soon that shoots well enough to buy a bunch of them.
