308 Win 165 Gr Bullet?

Is anyone is shooting a 308 Win with 165 Gn Bullets? If so could you share what bullet, powder, Primer, and how far you are off the lands? I got a 308 I'm trying to get to shoot 165's and having some trouble.

Re: 308 Win 165 Gr Bullet

I don't shoot 165's in my .308, but I'll throw this out FYI anyways. I load 168 gr Sierra HPBT's in my .308's and neither EVER liked the bullet being jammed. In fact. my best groups (in a 1:10 twist stock barrel) were shot using the AOL shown in the Sierra Manual and the jump was prety healthy. In fact, when I seated the bullet to jam or even touch trhe rifling, I got some of the worst groups those rifles ever shot. Went back to the healthy jump and the groups went down to sub MOA in 100 yds. As for powders, I've always used either Varget, RE15 or IMR 4895 in the range of 42 grs at 100 yds, Gotta test to know which powder works best in your particular rifle, but obviously, the longer shots require more powder. Just some things to consider as your rifle may be a jam hater. Just keep watching for pressure signs anytime you load or test.

I'm of the same opinion. Found a bunch of Nosler 165 gr bullets a while back that shot great (for a hunting bullet) but the farther out I seated them the worse they grouped. Even in my factory Remington with an "arm length freebore and throat" I got 1/2 MOA accuracy. Rifle did better with 175 HPBT's but for a lighter hunting bullet the Nosler 165 BT's were pretty good. I used 168 gr load data from Hodgdon for my workup because I already had a sheet printed for it.

Thanks y'all. I made it to the range today. I seated the bullets further in. And me and this rifle are starting to get along better. I still have some work let to do but things are looking better. I also backed off my load a bit. I got my groups down in the 9/16 - 3/4" range.

What bullet and powder did you use? What is the over all lenght of your loaded round? What is the lenght is of your barrel?

I used what little Varget I still have left. Things started to come together at 43 grns. I am still working on seating depth. Best so far is 2.790 haven't gone in any deeper yet. I plan on trying a 2.780 and a 2.770 with the 43 grn charge. The rifle is a blueprinted Rem. 700 action fitted with a #4 Benchmark 5R 10 twist 23" long with an HS stock that I had. A McMillian Rem BDL stock is on order and due around August. It doesn't like em 2.800 or longer or hotter loads.

I shoot Hornady 165 Interlocks in my Model 600 Remington. I use 45 grains of Varget and seat the bullet to the ring. They shoot sub-minute no problem on the days when I can hold that light rifle steady enough! It clocks 2650 fps from the 18 1/2-inch barrel according to my old chrono.

44 grains of IMR 4895 has virtually identical velocity and accuracy.
