308 vs 6.5 284

can anyone help i am in the process of buying a new rifle and cannot decide on the calibre.

I fancied a 308 for its accuracy long barrel life and lots of load imformation availiable for this calibre.

has the 6.5 284 got many advantages over the 308 i know it is said to be more accurate at 1000 yards.

the rifle is going to be used for hunting and target shooting out to about 800 yards.

any thoughts thanks.

I'd go with the 6.5 284, if for no other reason than that's what the B/R guys are shooting.
I assume your planning on a custom rifle as I believe you'll be disappointed with a factory rifle's performance at 800 yards.

Go with the .308 for all the reasons mentioned. I just started shooting a Pac-Nor 3 groove 1 in 12" Super Match and am amazed at the accuracy. There is not a powder or bullet combo. I've shot, five thus far, that were not superior. The caliber is very easy to load for, good Lapua brass, plenty of proven loads, easy on barrels.

308 with a 28"+ barrel, heavy bullets and N550 you could get pretty close to the 6.5x284. Having to replace a barrel every 1000 rounds, what a nightmare!

The 6.5-284 is a rather specialized cartridge. Start with a .308 and after you experience what its capabilities are you'll be able to judge whether or not you want to take on the 6.5-284.

A .308 will probably take care of 90%+ of your needs.

I own both calibers. The 308W is as accurate as the 6.5-284; it is pushed by the wind almost twice as much but it has about twice the barrel life. I would advice getting a .308W.

I must admit I don't shoot even 800 feet - let alone yards or meters - but I do get along well with the plain .284. Do the 6.5 bullets have that much advantage over the 7-mm's?

thankyou everyone for all the very helpful replys have just orderd a uniqe alpine in 308 win takes about 3 months order time. gives me time to choose a scope.

the 308 by far sounds the best all round i do not want neither can afford to be replacing barrels every 1000 rounds that wont hardly last a year.

thanks again.
