.308 twist rate for FTR rifle

What twist rate are you FTR shooters running? I'm trying to decide between 1-12 and 1-10.
Thanks

With very few exceptions F-TR shooters are running 1:10, It kind of started even thought it wasn't really needed for the 185s but it worked, and it's about perfect for the 200 class bullets.

I think all but 1 of mine, worn out and newish, are 1:10

All my .308 barrels are currently 10-twist. In the past I have run 185 Juggernauts, 185 Hybrids, and 200.20Xs out of an 11-twist barrel. The 11-twist barrels worked well, even with the 200.20X bullet. Although the 200.20X bullet was predicted to suffer from a few percentage points loss of intrinsic BC due to the slow twist rate, they still shot very well. Nonetheless, as others have already noted, there is really no reason not to use a 10-twist barrel in this day and age, especially if you plan to run 200s out of a relatively short (24") barrel, where you likely won't be generating the velocities enjoyed by most F-TR shooters using barrels of 30" or so in length.

There may be other factors involved but I couldn’t get 200.20x Berger hybrids to stabilize from a 1:10 twist barrel. The 185 juggernauts did well and I might try the 200 hybrids next as I’m losing some wind advantage on the 185’s. It might be the high humidity conditions or just that barrel which is a 29” Brux heavy contour.

I'd say that'd weird. Lots of brux 1:10's out there winning big matches with 200.20x's.

I agree and that’s why I spent 500 rds of load development trying. In the end, I just couldn’t get there with that bullet. I have a kreiger barrel with the same twist that worked well with the 200.20x.

That is what happens when you get a “bad barrel”. I cast no shade in the direction of the maker, sometimes they hatch and they just ain’t quite right.

1X10 or 11 would be fine for stabalization. My unsolicited but educated opinion is that 24" won't be competitive at all at 1000 yards for F-TR and only marginally competitive at 600 with 200 grain projectiles.

I always ran 1:10, never shot anything heavier the 185 juggs. A fellow shooter just switched to a 1:10 from an 1:11 and feels he doesn’t get the same velocity with juggs as he did with the 11. Obviously, every barrel is unique and YMMV, he never got the 200.20x’s to work in either barrel, so he shoots the juggs almost exclusively. If 200’s aren’t in the picture, a 1:11 is fine. I made 1K with the Juggs and a 26” barrel at a little over 1300 fps.
