308 Suppressors

I don't care about length, I just want to be able to see my crosshairs.

I want the best Suppressor for my 308, which will be used for my 6BR & 223.

Give me ideas, and a starting place.

I went to my local dealer with my rifle already threaded barrel and tested them and then made my decision. Weight and size was a factor , as most suppressors work well.

I just received my stamp for a Thunderbeast Ultra 7. I plan to use it on my 30 and smaller magnums all the way down to the .223. I installed the brake and can on my 28 Nosler and ran about 10 rounds through it. No discernible POI change at 100 yards compared to having a Centershot brake on before. Felt recoil was interesting, I can best describe it as a long slow push. I even shot a couple rounds without ear plugs just to hear the real sound. Loud, but not uncomfortable. Shooting it was a real joy. Can't wait to try it at distance.

I then screwed the can on a 18" RRA ATH carbine in .223 Rem and shot a couple mags worth of prairie dog ammo. That was fun. I am going to have my 26" AR barrel threaded this week.

While running a 30 caliber can isn't ideal for smaller cartridges, it does work. Everything in life is a compromise and a $1000 suppressor is going to have to work on many rifles. I have a Thunderbeast for my 338 Lapua as well, waiting on the stamp for it. Thunderbeast seemed to have been in the market for quite a while and are well respected in the PRS game so that is where I went. Not to say there are not other manufacturers, but I like mine.

I have a Gemtec quicksand and a Dead Air Sandman L. Both are good cans but this weekend shooting them side by side the Sandman had a slightly different Tone, which was very pleasant and was also noticed byt the other guys with me. I attached it to my 18in. AR and even though its a .30 can it was quieter than the M4 2000 on a friends gun. I think I paid $700 for the Sandman I have another Sandman S on the way.

I would look at Silencer Co Harvester or Omega. Thunderbeast is a good direct thread option. There has been a lot of progress in suppressor design.

Just stating I don't want my POI interfered with. May not be an issue, just making sure.

POI will shift with a suppressor vs without. At least this has been my experience on several barrels with 3 different cans (2 Gemtechs and an AAC). It may or may not be much, but it is certainly real and measurable. Oh... if you are talking about the can being to large in diameter, I don't think this is an issue.

As far as buying advice goes, go titanium, .30cal, direct thread mount. Even though my stainless HVT is quieter on paper (and a lot cheaper) than my Ti Sandstorm, the additional heft way out on the end of the barrel is a big negative. I don't notice the difference in noise.

Be careful, they are addictive!

My main goal is to have the quietest silencer made.
A 50 suppressor will be the quietest. Not going to be the most practical by far though. Once you get one or start shooting ones your friends have you will have a better idea of what's important to you. Super quiet requires subsonic ammunition and most people aren't prepared to give up the speed. The difference between a 5-7or9" suppressor is very noticable also if mobility is of any concern.

SRT ARMS -great suppressors

I've yet to have a suppressor not change my POA. Thunder beast is the brand I would buy. I have 2 of them.

Dennis,

any can you buy will change poi, some of that is on the weight of the can, that is why ti is better than ss. also if you want quiet as #1 you need size, a 9" can is quieter than a 7", more baffles more quiet, but a 9" will have likely a bigger poi change....cause it is heavier. If you want a super quiet can do not be surprised if larger is recommended. Other calibers...this is where the rub comes in. if you want 308 and buy the can direct thread it will likely be 5/8 x 24 if you want to use it on your ar (223) likely that is is too big. most cans for them are 1/2x28. so....if you are using on multiple sizes I recommend the thread over muzzlebrake or muzzle flash. for example, I wanted one center fire can to do all my work. I picked a can that will do magnum capable specs, thread over muzzle brake. it will work on 300 mag down. I have thread over brakes for 7mmRM, 260, 6mm Slr, and for my ar 223 a thread over flash supressor. it works on all, max bang for the buck. My can is a SAS reaper, it was and still is on sale at Mile High Shooting. TBAC (thunder beast) makes a mount like it. likely so do others. it is a rock solid conical mount. I remove the can regularly and no change of poi as long as the can is mounted. I have a fat short barrel on the 260 and it's change of impact is .1 mil at 100yd. I also have a .22 can, direct thread. it too has a poi change but like the center fire cans the groups are the same or better with the can. Other than cash there is no down side to being quiet. Check out Mile high for their SAS sale or go TBac you can't go wrong. and just wait for it (you will as the BATF aint fast) hahahaha, you'll be ordering another so you can shoot in the backyard and the neighbors think you are airgunning.
