.308 Short Range Benchrest

There is a 100, 300. and 400 yard Varmint match coming up.
They have a Factory Class.

The 100 yard bull 3/16", 300yrd. 5/8" wide 1.5" tall, and 400yrd. 3/4" wide 2" tall.

Anyone shoot a .308 in a match like this?

Reduced loads?

Being that it is a "varmint" match I will assume that it is a score match. And in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a 308 for that. You get the 30 cal hole in a gun that doesn't beat you up. 30 cal hole gives you a little edge in 2 ways, where a 6mm might miss a score ring the 308 may just cut it and if you can't use spotting scopes, the 30 cal hole at 300 and 400 is easier to see on the target so you can adjust your next shot. No reason at all to reduce loads.
Just my .02

What sorta 308 is it? I have a 308 in my LR rig and ita fine to shoot if bench. Just apply correct technique and set your gear up correctly.

125 to 135 Grain Sierra Bullets work well for this type of shooting.

No need to beat yourself up with 175-180 Grainers.

YMMV

many many yrs ago i started my shooting career in n.b.r.s.a. 100 200 yd bench rest.
i built a tightneck 308 until the 6ppc took storm. the 308 is a true single digit one hole gun, loaded with varget and a 168 gr sierra on lapua cases. won many times and shot some really great groups. since moved to 1000 yd ibs and never looked back.
the 308 is still one of my favorite calibers and you will do well in a varmit shoot. for me the 168 didnt recoil to bad but really shot great. dont know much about your rig so im taking a chance here- my 25 in shilen ss select match on a mcmillan mbr tracked really well. i used a sinclaire rest- load was varget powder, 168 sierra match and cci br primers. i ll go look up exact load and pm you, but work up slowly, you should do fine !!

Savage LRPS with 30" barrel. All Savage

Ok,

So it's not a BR rig. Fair enough. What's your rest setup like? Or using a bipod?

Using lighter bullets like the 125 - 135gr will help a bunch to lessen recoil and maintain accuracy. Maybe those new 125gr TMK would be good. Or bullets like the Speer 130gr can be very accurate. I'd chat to some 30BR shooters and see what bullets they suggest. Slower burning powder will help also to lessen recoil and rifle movement. I can really notice the difference between my single based powder loads and double based with recoil amount and the way the recoil feels and makes the rifle handle.

Using full Benchrest setup. This "club" match does not permit flat bottom stocks in the factory class.
