308 Remington...Short or long action??

I went into a store today seeking a base for a new 308 I just purchased. I dont know if I need a long or short action base. I believe it's a short action, but I have a short action single shot follower, and thought I could use it in this rifle, but theres no way it will fit. The follower came out of a 223 Remington. I thought there was only 2 different size of followers but I may be wrong..
Any help on this??
Thank you

If it is a factory Remington 700, a .308 will be a short action. The reason your follow for .223 wouldn't work is because it is made to fit in an even shorter magazine box than the .308, despite the action being the same length.
