To the people who shoot a short throated 1995 .308 Palma -
What powders are you using?
I used some varget to start and it shot amazing. 155smk palmas , showed potential with 175 smk also. Velocities were low and pressure was high. So I loaded up some using imr 8208. Velocities even lower , pressure ok , accuracy no good. Terrible. Some of that was me , just wasn't able to get right behind rifle that day. But the rifle wasn't shooting either.
22" tight bore Bartlein 5r Remington varmint contour is the barrel in question. Wanted a rifle that was practical to take hunting. I understand velocities will be lower but I want to get as much as I can out of it.

I shot 46gr of Varget in a short throat with 155.5s. I would think Varget, H4895, or 8208XBR would be good for a short throat.

4064. if it don't shoot with that, it ain't the powder's fault. my 45gr of 4064 makes more velocity than 46gr of Varget in the same rifle.
i've never heard of anyone not liking 155's and 8208 so if yours didn't work with that there might be something to fix besides the load.

I'm with RMINUT -IMR4064 and H4895 work very well in my Savage. 43.5 of IMR4064 under a 155.5 Berger works nicely at 600 yards, and bumping up a good bit does well at 1000. (0.020" off the lands for the Bergers, and when I shoot the Sierra 2156's, I go 0.060" off the lands)

Who needs all those new-fangled wonder powders!?!

I get really good accuracy out of my short throated 308 and light bullets using either 8208 XBR or Varget. I use 2 grains less 8208 XBR than Varget. What I don't do is shoot them in the same range session unless I give the barrel a thorough cleaning. Thanks, Ray

Heck I run H335, BLC-2 and 4064 and AA2460 in my .308's.

Yes, I use a 0.298 x 0.3075 and either Berger 155.5 FB's or Hybrids seated 20 thou off the lands. 46.0 gr Varget is my standard load. My 30 inch barrel produces around 2970 fps.

I figured I should be able to get 2700 fps from a 155 smk with 22" barrel. It's not looking like it so far. Maybe I've been spoiled by my 6.5x47's recoil.
