.308 or .303 British wild boars

just wondering which would be more effective. it is also my understanding that .308 Win shoots a heavier grain bullet than the .303

Both will do the job, but bullet choice is most important. I prefer heavier bullets with weights over 160 grains. I've used the Speer Grand Slam 180 grain version with good success. If you want to do double shoulder shots on the bigger guys, I'd go with the Barnes TSX or Hornady GMX solid copper alloy bullets.

Just going to say that while 303 Brit is always fun, it isn't as prolific here as 308 WIN.
Tons of history around the 303 Brit and it has killed game all over the planet, however...

If you have them both in front of you the 308 WIN is just much easier to live with in the US than a rimmed military cartridge in nearly every respect. Bullets and brass are one bucket of issues, magazines and feed are also another set of issues.

In terms of case capacity, they are nearly equal (56 grains H2O), however their historical pressure is not. The 303 Brit was traditionally roughly 53 Kpsi while the 308 WIN is roughly 60 Kpsi, and their energy is roughly 2500 ft*lb for the 303 and 2650 ft*lb for the 308 WIN.

In terms of short range shots and terminal effects, both will kill a boar with the proper bullets and placement.

I have used 303 Brit for both hunting and competition for the pure sake of the nostalgia, but... the 308 and 303 Brit are not an equal challenge in terms of logistics.

If you hunt with 303 Brit in these times, it is because you chose to accept the extra effort for the sake of nostalgia.

yes. .308 seems to be ubiquitous. .303 more rare especially in the states. feral hogs/wild boars are a problem. I'd rather have something that was effective in dispatching them instead of just making them more angry.
