.308 oal problem

Hi Folks

Bit of a prob with my oal.

Measurement of 2.820
Therefor aiming for 2.810 oal from my press

My redding competion die micrometer will not screw out far enough to achieve this.

Am I being a tit or what?

Just quessing here.
I'll bet you screwed in the die until it touched the shellholder. On the comp dies you should screw it in until you compress the sleeve in almost fully. Not quite touching the shellholder to the solid body part of the die.

Also, to shorten col the micrometer gets turned in not out.
Just in case your turning in the wrong direction.

yep, the press with the shell holder in fully compresses the spring coller at the bottom of the die.

The problem is I cant screw the micrometer out far enough to achieve the 2.810 oal

You should screw the die body OUT a little as Jo suggested, then reset the lock ring to have it set up right, then you'll have more adjustment room on the micrometer. Read the previous post carefully - if you want to make the COL shorter, you screw the mircometer top IN, not OUT.

Think about it - screwing the mircometer out makes the distance from spindle tip to shellplate longer, screwing it in makes the distance shorter. Make sense? You should have no problem with covering a fairly broad COL range if you have the die body set right from the beginning.
