308 neck thickness after neck turning

If you are shooting them in a standard chamber, you shouldn't be neck turning in the first place! If you have a tight neck chamber, the diameter of the chamber neck will dictate this dimension.

I turn my brass to 0.0125' and have my reamer made to match that dimension,0.336' chamber neck for 0.333' cartridge neck). I wouldn't recommend that for everyone or every situation, but it works well for my methods and needs.

Ditto to TheSilverFox: Lapua loaded round neck dia. is .338', I use a .336' neck bushing, for a .343' chamber neck dia. Life is good. Mike/ TheSilverFox: Great posting w/ pics. Enjoyed very much, Thank You.:)

Consistent neck tension and bullet release is always a good thing, regardless of what kind of chamber you have.

Given the wide variation in neck wall thickness between brands, if you are neck turning for clean-up and to make the necks more consistent,as opposed to turning to fit a specific chamber dimension like German alluded to), you need to take into account what kind of brass you are using.

In my experience, Lapua .308 Win brass runs about 14.5-15 thou @ the neck. Winchester .308 Win brass runs about 11-12 thou. I haven't turned any Winchester lately, but the last oh, 1500 or so Lapua .308 that I did I turned to ~14.1 thou or so.

Yes, it's in a factory,Obermeyer) chamber. Most any .308 Win 'match' chamber short of custom ones spec'd for a particular purpose tend to be pretty generous - .340-.342' neck diameter, and my loaded rounds mike a little over .336 with Lapua brass - with Winchester brass they are closer to .331... such is life with the .308 Winchester.

A few years ago I did turn some brass for my .308. I shot some comparison groups back to back with non turned brass and wind flags. I did not find any measurable difference.

Try it for yourself and give us a range report.

I hate turning brass for my .262 ppc so any reason not to turn on my .308 is good enough.

Thanks for the comment. I wrote this 2 years ago. I have since then made leaps and bounds in my reloading knowledge. The funny thing though, I can't shoot any better groups, lol.
