308 loads

a friend has a 308 browning.
he is using factory 308 winchester loads that have the 150 grain polly tip on the bullets.loads work well on deer.my ? is what loads will dulplacate the factory loads/
any help will be apreciated.

Several years ago, I dissected a 308 Federal 168g GM Match round so I could duplicate it. It turned out to have a 168g Sierra match king bullet, and 44.5g of Varget in it. So I made some up after making sure that was an ok round with the the 44.5g of Varget. Then I shot them both, over my Crony, and the factory and my duplicates, bullet speed was the same (2710fps).
So thats how I did it, I compared the powders by color, grain type and size, and its overall looks, then checked the books to see if that amount of Varget was ok.
Good luck, they dont always use a commercial powder.

The Winchester Supreme use the Nosler Ballistic Silver tip bullet. After that it's just finding the powder/charge that matches the velocity.
I pulled a Winchester Supreme apart just to look and it's a duplex powder they use, you could SEE flake and ball powder together.

and 44.5g of Varget in it.

Well you got the same velocity, so that pretty much nailed it,,but how did/could you tell it was Varget?
Alot of extruded powders look the same too me.
4198, Varget, RL15, etc,,,?

They dont all look the same to me, and I compared there's too all of the 6 or 7 different powders I had on hand. And these two looked exactly the same, they were the same size and type of kernels when measured with a caliper, and the color and texture was all a dead on match.
And both loads, mine and Federals, when loaded with 44.5g shot the same.
Since then, I have loaded close to a thousand of these rounds, it shoots in the .2 and .3 at 2710 fps from my H-S Precision HTR 308.
No, this process will not work in all cases, and I cant recommend it, I just said this is how I did it. And it did work in this case.
