.308 loads with 169 SMK

Finally got around to do a work up this fall with the 169's. For now 44,4 gr, of varget, cci br-2 primer in federal gmm cases is getting me velocities around 2,690 fps with sd'S around 5 fps and very nice groups around 3/8 to 1/2 inch in an old factory stock Rem. 700 BDL Varmint. I was surprised at the speed. I don't get that with the 168's.

42.3 varget Fed GMM large primers and Lapua brass seated .007-.010 off the lands gets me around 2680. Sub .25 at 100. I started at .020 off and went toward the lands shrank the groups. Bisley match chamber.

Good luck!!

A few years ago, Sierra came out with the 169 SMK which was to rectify the short comings of the 168 SMK past 800 yards. Does anyone have a any pet loads they would like to share? Same load as the 168 SMK? Looking to try this out in 2024 for LR.
Lapua brass with LRP or SRP's with 41.1 grs AR-Comp loaded at a COAL of 2.928 getting an MV at 2730 fps out of a 26" 10:1 barrel. AR-Comp worked pretty well with the 177 SMK's too. :)

Thanks for the load data guys! I haven't started with the 169s yest, but your load data jives with my best with the 168s.

Reviving an older thread here.
Just did a "validity" test trying some 169's and thinking this might help some people wondering if this bullet will shoot.

I'm a F classer and wanted an easy shooting bullet for my local 300y comps, plus saving my 185 Jugg's for longer range.

Literally hard jammed a dummy round and seated .020 in from that.
loaded w/ Varget 3 each 43.5,44.0,44.5. Man let me tell you I'm DONE! All groups were under .712" at 300y. Two groups were .596" and .547". Totally amazed how well they did. Sorry, no velocity info because my labradar was acting up.

My rig is:
BAT M 30" barrel throated a little long. Seb Bipod 18 lb rig. Lapua Palma 450's and Varget.

These newish SMK's have excited me!! The BC is a fantastic increase over the tried and true 168. If you shoot out to 500 or more....might ought give em a GO!

Interesting that we keep trying to re-invent the wheel .
The original load for the 168 SMK for International Competition was 42.5gr of H-4064 , in a Winchester case , with the Gold primer , ( Not available ) !
Might suggest a Rem 7-1/2BR primer , your favorite flavor case , and playing with N140 as a starter .

I just got my 500 pack of 169 SMKs. There a real nice looking Bullet .
Really looking forward to shooting them in my TR rifle . Being shooting the old 168 s .
Now I also just got 4 lbs Staball MATCH powder that I wish to try out
Any u guys loading 308 W with 169 -175- 185 gr bullets with Staball Match ?
Results ‍♂️
Thanks Jim
